1 Warm-up What is the difference between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells? Which type of cells do humans have? So which type of cell is more complex?

2 Chapter 7.1 Microscope & Cell

3 Microscope A microscope is an instrument used to make small objects look larger.

4 Three Types of Microscopes
Simple Microscope: only has one lens.

5 Compound Light Microscope: uses series of light and lenses to magnify objects

6 Electron Microscope: Uses a magnetic field to bend the beam of an electron

7 Microscope A C B E D F H I G J K L M N

8 Microscope Parts

9 The Cell Theory Robert Hooke – studied cork cells
Schleiden – plant cell Schwann – animal cell Cells – basic building blocks of all living things 1. All organisms composed of 1 or more cells 2. Cells are the basic unit of organization of organisms 3. All cells come from preexisting cells

10 Prokaryote Cells Unicellular organisms that lack membrane-bound organelles Example: Bacteria & Archaea

11 Eukaryote Cells Contain a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
Examples: Animals, Plants, Fungi Organelles – membrane bound structures with in eukaryotic cells, each organelle has a specific function for cell survival

12 Similarities vs. Differences
cell membranes ribosomes Both have genetic material/DNA cytoplasm Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus, which contains the genetic material. The DNA in prokaryotic cells floats freely in the cell. Eukaryote cells have membrane bound organelles. Eukaryotic Cells are on average ten times larger than Prokaryotic cells.
