1 Decision Analysis Description: Students will use a decision analysis chart to decide what cleaning product to clean the mildew in a shower. Students will rank the products using three criteria: (a) Effectiveness, (b) Safety, and (c) Personal Preference. Disciplines Covered: Social Studies & Health Prep Time: 30 minutes Activity time: 1 class period What Should I Use to Clean my Shower? Introduction

2 You have 20 minutes to complete this task 1.Work in groups of 2-3 2.Refer to product criteria and labels 3.Complete “Product Comparison” sheet for Tilex® and Lysol® 4.Rate Tilex® and Lysol® by the listed criteria. (*For each factor answer the question, “Does this product rate high (=3) or low (=1)”?) 5.Make a final decision about product choice. What Should I Use to Clean my Shower? 6 Student outcomes: Apply toxicology concepts to decision making; Decisions involve balancing costs, benefits, personal values and scientific evidence; Develop and use criteria for evaluating solutions to a particular problem; Use a decision chart to evaluate solutions or actions in light of specific criteria or goals; **In the HCP scenarios, students assess chemical risks to humans and environment. What Should I Use to Clean my Shower? Debrief Decision Analysis

7 Enrichment Ideas: Have students create their own criteria to rank products; Expand decision analysis to include more chemicals -- Conduct internet searches for other products that claim to control mold; -- Add these products into label reading and mold control activities Ask students to take on the role of various stakeholders (e.g. product manufacturer, parent, etc.) What Should I Use to Clean my Shower? Debrief
