Investigation #3- Go Carts Part #1-Day 1 Activating Strategy- on page 1 in your packet. In your own words, describe a cart. Essential Question- How can you design a go-cart that can roll down a ramp and across the floor a short distance?

Investigation #3- Go Carts Part #1-Day 1 Investigation #3 Your Challenge- read along on page 1 of your student journal.

Investigation #3- Go Carts Part #1-Day 1 Vocabulary 1) A) design- the way that something is put together is its design. B) It is also the process of figuring out how to construct something. 2) Engineer- an engineer is a person who designs things using scientific knowledge.

Investigation #3- Go Carts Part #1-Day 1 You will now select 1 partner that you will work with on this investigation. Select one team member to be your team’s Getter. Attempt to complete the challenge.Attempt to complete the challenge. With your partner, using the materials in your kit, build a go-cart that will travel down the ramp and across the floor a short distance.

Investigation #3- Go Carts Part #1-Day 2 Do Now- To prepare for our first mini- convention, complete the first two sections on page 3 of your journal. Mini-Convention- Select one member of your team to present your cart to the class. Take notes in the third section on page 3 in your journal. CONTINUE TO BUILD YOUR CART

Investigation #3- Go Carts Part #1-Day-3 Do Now- enter a response for the summary on page 4 of your journal.Do Now- enter a response for the summary on page 4 of your journal. Continue to work on your model.Continue to work on your model. Compare your designs with others.Compare your designs with others. Draw a model of your cart on page 5 in your journal.Draw a model of your cart on page 5 in your journal. Return materials to the material storage area and be ready to take some notes on page 6.Return materials to the material storage area and be ready to take some notes on page 6.

Investigation #3- Go Carts Part #1-Day-3 Homework: Read the science story “ Early Autos” in story book pages 25-28 and complete questions 1-4 on page 7 in your journal.

Investigation #3- Go Carts Part #1-Day-3 Investigation #3 Journal Page #6 The way that something is put together is its ______________. An _____________ uses scientific knowledge to design useful things. Content/Inquiry Entry How can you make a cart that will roll freely down a ramp? –Solving problems calls for design and testing of possible solutions.

Investigation #3- Go Carts Part #1-Day 4 Do Now- take out your homework to be checked by Mr. Fisher.Do Now- take out your homework to be checked by Mr. Fisher. As Mr. Fisher checks your work, re-read and be ready to discuss your answers. Get your carts ready for the race!!!!

Investigation #3- Go Carts Part #2 Day-1 Do Now- Complete the questions on page 8 in your journal and prepare to discuss your responses. Your New Challenge- Read along on page 9 Getters- grab your team’s materials Teams start designing your self-propelled cart.

Investigation #3 Part 2 Do Now- On page 9 in your journal, answer the question: What has your group come up with? Mini-Convention- ##I am going to demonstrate how to use the rubber bands to create power for your cart.

Investigation #3 Part 2 2 nd Mini-Convention-page 102 nd Mini-Convention-page 10 What are some problems we are having? What are some problems that other groups are having? Answer the question on the bottom of page 10

Investigation #3 Part 2 Discussion of Wheels- page 11 in journal. How far will a wheel travel with one complete rotation? How many times will the wheel have to go around in order to drive your cart 2m? Can you get the rubber band to wind up that many times? Work with your partner to figure out how to make your cart go further.

Investigation #3 Part 2 Mini-Convention page 11 in journal. What did you and your partner come up with? How about making a change in the design? Bigger wheels will travel further with each turn of the hub. ##Homework – Response Sheet- Go-Carts

Investigation #3 Part 2 Vocabulary VocabularyPage 12 1) The axle is the rod that connects to the wheels, so they turn together. 2) Other parts of a device revolve or rotate on the bearing. 3) Friction is the resistance to movement on surfaces that touch. 4) The center of the wheel that is fastened to the axle is the hub. 5) Traction is a kind of friction that allows wheels to turn without slipping on a surface. 6) The wheel is the disk that turns on a central axis

Investigation #3 Part 2 Content/Inquiry 1) 1)How does wheel size affect the distance a rubber-band-powered go-cart can travel? 2) 2)How does the length of the rubber band affect the distance your go-cart can travel?

Investigation #3 Part 2 Reading Read the story: “Henry Ford and His Model T” on pages 29-32 Complete questions #1-6 on page 14

Investigation #3 Part 3 G0-Cart Rally After the rally, answer the questions on page 16 in your journal. Reading Science Story- “On the Line” pages 33-36 Answer questions 1-5 on journal page 17.

Investigation #3 Word Bank Entries page 18Word Bank Entries page 18 Technology is the enterprise of using science to develop objects, machines, and materials that are of use to society. A variable is anything you can change in a design that might affect the performance of the product.

Content/Inquiry The five-phase process to “Product Development” 1)Design- the plan to build something 2)Construction- building a prototype, or first model of the product. 3)Testing- Trying it out to see if the product does what it is supposed to do. 4)Evaluation- Decide if the product is good enough and that it accomplishes what you set out to do. 5)Redesign- Making changes to the product to make it better and to reach the original design goals.
