1 Who Are Our Leaders Day 4 – 5 Written by Nicole Ruge

2 Day 4

3 Introduction Come up with definitions of each of the following types of leaders:  Hero  Mentor  Role Model You have 10 minutes to complete the definitions.

4 Leader A person with the ability to guide or direct others.

5 Hero A person noted for special achievement in a particular field.

6 Mentor The action of being a teacher or counselor.

7 Role Model People who help you see what is expected of them and show tem how to act in different situations.

8 Each of the vocabulary words can be interchangeable with the word LEADER.

9 Brainstorm Brainstorm in your table groups make a list of 3-5 people who would fall under each type of leader.  Examples: Oprah Winfrey Parents or other caregivers Sports coaches Martin Luther King, Jr. Firefighters Mother Teresa You will have 5 minutes to complete your list.

10 Assignment ~ Find a newspaper or magazine and look up an article about a leader (hero, mentor, role model) that they would like to review. Complete the Our Leader Worksheet with a partner.

11 Follow-up Questions Can anyone be a leader? Why or why not? Does it matter if a person is young or old? Rich or poor? Famous? Female or male? What did you learn about leadership today?

12 Ticket Out The Door Write 3 – 4 sentence about a time when you were in a leadership position. Where you successful? Did you like being a leader? What were you doing?

13 Day 5

14 Flowerpot Activity Each table group will work as a team to put together the pieces in the bag to make a flower pot.  Rules There can not be any hole bigger than a quarter. Use tape to hold the pieces together. First group done will win a prize!

15 Follow-up Questions Who was the main leader? What leadership qualities do they have? Did you have any problems constructing the flower pot? What kinds of problems? Why did you think that was a problem? How did you achieve your goal? What would have made it easier to construct the flower pot? What kinds of leadership did you experience and observe?

16 Qualities of a Leader Each partner group is going to get a copy of Brainstorm the Qualities of a Leader worksheet.  You have 3 minutes to brainstorm with as many good qualities of leaders as you can.  Share with the class and write qualities around your leadership man on the white board.  Come up with a Top 10 List for Qualities of a Good Leader.

17 Assignment Complete Qualities of a Good Leader Worksheet individually. 10-12 minutes to complete worksheet then we will discuss as a class.

18 Ticket Out The Door Write 3 – 4 sentences about the qualities you have as a leader or would like to work on improving.
