Guidance for Teachers Teachers may use the story to explore characters, inviting children to say how Alphonse is feeling; to engage in prediction activities, to say what he might do or where he might go next. Children may join in with story-telling on a second or third hearing, holding up pictures of the story, see Year 3 Planning and Resources section. Children should also be encouraged to join in with repetitive refrains. Teachers may ask questions about the order in which things happen to Alphonse. What events must remain constant, what events could be re-arranged. Children might be encouraged to re-tell events (see planning). Less able or younger pupils could do this more simply by choosing a picture to colour or draw and by saying how Alphonse is feeling e.g. Je suis content. With older or more able pupils teachers may explore changing a scene into the first person with slide 24.
