2 Splints for Injuries What is it? –Strip of rigid material –Used to support or immobilize a broken bone

3 Review: Steps for Safety #1. Evaluate the situation Are you at risk of injury? Are you or the victim threatened by fire, toxic chemicals, or unstable building?

4 Review: Steps for Safety #2. Avoid moving the victim Only move if victim is in immediate danger!!!! But if you are putting yourself in danger, call professionals!

5 Review: Steps for Safety #3. Call for help! 911 EMT Police Ambulance Athletic Trainer Doctor

6 Review: Steps for Safety #4. Get Consent! Do NOT start helping a person without their consent!

7 Splinting an Ankle Materials: – Triangle Bandages (2 or 3) – Pillow/Cardboard/ Towel/Blanket Directions  Do NOT move the ankle!  Slide triangle bandages in position under ankle (two above break and one below break)  Slide the blanket carefully under the ankle  Tie the bandages in a knot (snug)  Check for circulation, feeling, and movement

8 Splinting a Knee Materials: – Triangle Bandages (3) – Board or Body Directions:  Do NOT move the knee!  Slide triangle bandages into position under both legs (two above, one below the break)  Tie (snug)  Check for circulation, feeling, and movement

9 Sling for Shoulder or Arm Materials: – Triangle Bandage (1 or 2) Directions  Do NOT move injured shoulder or arm  Two ways…  Place acute angle on injured shoulder  Place 90 degree angle at elbow  Pull up around neck and tie (don’t tie too tight)  Check for circulation, feeling and movement

10 Splint a Wrist Materials: – Triangle Bandages (2) – Towel/Blanket/Hoodie/ Pillow Directions:  Do NOT move wrist  Place triangle bandages under the wrist (1 above, 1 below)  Put hoodie, blanket or book in position under wrist  Tie bandages (snug)  Check circulation, feeling, and movement

11 Splint for Finger Material: – Medical Tape – Finger/Splint/Popsicle Stick Directions:  Do NOT move finger  Put splint in place (popsicle stick or finger)  Apply strips of medical tape above and below  Check circulation, feeling and movement
