2 Processes of the Stomach FThe stomach produces gastric juices comprised of HCL with an pH between 1.0 and 3.0 FThese juices break down food into amino acids to be used by the body. FToo much food or very spicy foods produces too much stomach acid which leads to many problems. 3 Results of Too Much Stomach Acid FIndigestion- Acid begins to eat away the protective layer of the stomach, creating ulcers and abdominal discomfort FHeartburn/Acid Reflux- Acid rises up into the esophagus and eats away the tissue. 4 The Cure?-Antacids FAntacids are basic compounds that neutralize the contents of the stomach to reach a comfortable level while also reducing foaming to prevent heartburn. FActive Ingredients in Prescription Antacids- FAluminum Hydroxide FMagnesium Hydroxide FCalcium Carbonate FSodium Hydrogen Carbonate FAntacids are basic compounds that neutralize the contents of the stomach to reach a comfortable level while also reducing foaming to prevent heartburn. 5 What Antacids Do FCombined with Alginates (from brown seaweed) makes a neutralizing layer for the stomach that prevents acid reflux. FAcid Reflux- acid rising from the stomach into the esophagus, causes “heartburn” FAnti-Foaming agents like dimethicone reduce the surface tension of stomach acid to prevent bubbles. FAntacids stop the damage acids cause on the stomach to allow the organ enough time to repair itself. 6 Side Effects of Antacids FSome compounds cause constipation, laxative effects, or overdose creates a basic stomach. FBasic stomachs also cause indigestion which can be confused with an acidic stomach, causing the ailed to take more antacids, increasing the problem.
