Today’s Agenda Who we are Ways to set up for the other 80% Content Ideas Math Ideas Language Arts Ideas Comments/Resources

Who are we? Jen Michelle Our school is about 150 students K-5 Last Year This Year

Setting up the other 80% Panther Time Parent Volunteers Specialist

Other 80% Option 1 Stay in Classroom Work independently Small group Anchor activities

Other 80% Option 2 Parent Volunteers Location Activities Expectations

Other 80% Option 3 Specialist Multiple ways to utilize Specialists are responsible for planning and teaching a math, content, or reading lesson SUPPORT the specialist

Turn and share Discuss ways you can engage your other 80% during intervention time.

Content Ideas Work in small groups to work on presentation to share with rest of class. This would work best for 3-5 in the classroom. For 1-2, the students would need adult supervision such as parent volunteers, specialist, or assistants.

Content Ideas Vocabulary Make index cards with word and picture on one side and definition on the other. Students make extras for those in Intervention groups. Students use a flipbook to write the word on one side and an illustration/definition on the inside. For social studies, students can use flipbook to write about important people: who are they, when they were important, and why they were important.

Make and Take Foldable to show understanding Fold paper hamburger style. Fold paper hamburger style again. Fold left side to meet right side. Unfold last two folds. Tear down the middle to the first crease. Unfold all the way and then refold hot dog style. Hold onto the outer edges (left and right) and push the paper towards the middle. Fold into little booklet. On front cover write or illustrate the main concept you are learning. On the following sheets, write words or ideas that you want to remember. Students now become the teacher in small groups.

Content Ideas Make a Menu Board with various websites on it. These should be websites that give the students more information about what they are learning or a place to experiment with what they are learning.

AppetizerMain CourseDessert Test your knowledge before you begin. Answer a few questions about volcanoes and teach yourself something new. http://www.scholastic.com /play/volcano.htm Basic information about earthquakes. http://www.thetech.org/ex hibits/online/quakes/overv iew/ Learn about the parts of a volcano and build your own erupting volcano when you visit this site. http://kids.discovery.com/gam es/build-play/volcano-explorer Learn new vocabulary words that deal with earthquakes. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/lea rn/animations/ Learn the science around earthquakes. Use Read Write 9 if you need help with a word. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/lea rn/kids/eqscience.php Brain Pop Videos – Please take and print the quiz when finished. Volcanoes http://www.brainpop.com/scie nce/earthsystem/volcanoes/ Earthquakes http://www.brainpop.com/scie nce/earthsystem/earthquakes/ Plate Tectonics http://www.brainpop.com/scie nce/earthsystem/platetectonic s/ Choose one activity from each course to learn about volcanoes and earthquakes. Volcanoes and Earthquakes

Content Ideas Read a book that you might other wise not be able to fit in. Have the students write about what they have learned about the content.

Have the specialist show how content applies to their area of expertise. (i.e. show on map where an artist or musician came from and it’s distance from USA when doing map study.)

Turn and Share Discuss some ways you can extend content in your school with the other 80%. How can you involve the specialist or volunteers? I have an idea!
