Canada Unit 8 – SS6H4a,b The French & The English
Assembled by Jennifer Phillips

Since its 1st settlement in 1497, Canada has been the object of a tug-of-war between nations. In 1534, it was claimed for France by Jacques Cartier and even named New France.

VS. The British, however, established their presence in Canada, as well, along the Hudson Bay. After years of war for ownership, both countries signed the Treaty of Paris in 1763, giving control of Canada to England. But as Canada developed into a unique country, it wanted independence from Britain’s rule.

Why did Canada want to be its own country?

Constitution Act of 1867 The Canadian colonies that were settled by the British remained under British law for almost 100 years. That meant that citizens in Canada had to pay taxes to a British government as well as follow the laws Britain set for its people. Must like America, Canada desired to be its own country with the ability to create its own laws.

In 1867, Britain agreed to let Canada form a confederation, or union, of independent states. Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia were united under a parliamentary government modeled after Britain’s. The English also helped the Canadian government write a constitution for the country. Although Canada was considered independent, it still had constitutional ties to Britain.

Constitution Act of 1982 This act was initiated by Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who wanted to cut all constitutional ties with Britain and make Canada a truly independent country. This act provided a new constitution that was not written with the help of British authority, but by Canada-born citizens. The new Canadian constitution provided guaranteed rights such as freedom of association, freedom of conscience and religion, and the right to vote. These rights are still enforced today, and Canada follows the rule of its self-written constitution.
