4 Overview of Proposed Streetcar Network 37 miles of Streetcar lines Constructed in 3 network phases based on:  System connectivity  Ridership potential  Location of operations & maintenance facilities  Manageable size 8 Lines total 4

5 Anacostia Streetcar Update Construction Phase 1a: – from Maintenance Facility site on South Capitol Street to Firth Sterling/Suitland Parkway – Completed 2010 Construction Phase 1b: – Connection to Anacostia Metro Station and construction of Maintenance Facility – Coordination with other construction efforts in area Phase 2: – From Anacostia Metro Rail Station to 11th Street Bridge – Currently in the NEPA Process

NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY ACT OF 1969 Process to identify social, environmental impacts of federally funded action Balance: – Public infrastructure development – Human and natural environment – Community, neighborhood preservation – Quality of life considerations Governs FTA environmental protection and project development process Aids federal decision-making

7 NEPA & Streetcar Program NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY ACT OF 1969 Resulted from: – Increasing appreciation for the environment (1960s) – Freeway revolts in response to construction of Interstate Highway System (1960s) Why does it apply to the streetcar? – Help define the project – Identify potential issues associated with proposed project and necessary mitigation – Maintain eligibility for federal funding for design, construction and operations
