ABOUT THE MODULE Theory Submission of a Research Proposal Doing the study Submission of the Report Presentation of the Report 7

WHAT IS RESEARCH? Reporting – This study calls for knowledge and skill with information sources and gatekeepers of information sources – Requires little inference or conclusion drawing Descriptive – Discover answers to the questions who, what, when, where and how – May involve collection of data and may involve relating the interaction of two or more variables 8

WHAT IS RESEARCH? Explanatory – Goes beyond description and attempts to explain the reasons for the phenomenon – Uses of theories or hypotheses Predictive – To evaluate specific courses of action or to forecast current and future values 9

PURPOSE OF RESEARCH To fulfill the need for knowledge of the organization, market, economy or another area of uncertainty Process of gathering, recording and analyzing data for aid in making business decision 10

RESEARCH PROPOSAL A structured written plan for a study or investigation Outlines the main problem to be investigated Basic components of a proposal: Introduction Literature Review Methodology 11

STRUCTURE OF PROPOSAL Title – Should be clear, concise, compact, correct and unambiguous – 12 to 15 words in a single sentence – Should be an area of interest for the researcher – Should add value to the current field of knowledge – Avoid redundancy – Three important aspects: Variables of study Setting Subjects of the study 12

TITLE Example 1: – e-Learning readiness among the Faculty of Education staff in University Teknologi MARA Variable of study:e-Learning readiness Setting:Faculty of Education, UiTM Subjects of study:Staff of the Faculty of Education Example 2: – Adult learners and their preference for learning styles in UiTM Variable of study:Learning style Setting:UiTM Subjects of study:Adult learners 13

TITLE Placement of words – Adult learners and their preference for learning style in UiTM – Learning style preference of adult learners in UiTM Redundant words should be omitted – The systematic development of a local initiative to create a learning center for technology education – A local learning center for technology education 14

TITLE Single sentence is better than separated by colon – Effect of frequent testing on achievement and attitude towards mathematics learning among Secondary One students’ in a school in Selangor – Effect of frequent testing on students’ achievement and attitude towards mathematics: A case study Redundant phrase – A research study on the charismatic leadership qualities of an excellent principal in an outstanding school in Malaysia 15

STRUCTURE OF PROPOSAL Problem Statement – Describes the issues to study – Identifies the general analysis approach – Can be constructed either in the form of a question or declarative statement – General statement – Researchable and lead to further research Research Questions – Feasible, clear, significant, ethical – At least three questions related to problems – 4 W, 1 H 16

STRUCTURE OF PROPOSAL Objectives of Study – Should be stated clearly – Form of statements related to the research questions – Convert the research questions into statements – Related to research questions – Purpose that attach to study – Convert research questions to statements – Identify, measure, analyse, recommend 17

STRUCTURE OF PROPOSAL Significance of Study – Explains the importance of the study – What value for organization, industries, country, researchers – What benefits to management of organisation, employees, industries 18
