What to Review for the Final Exam Physics I 1 st Semester 2013-14

The Final Exam is Worth 20% of your Semester Grade

The final exam is comprehensive, meaning it will cover the entire semester.

What to Bring Calculator #2 Pencil Note Page (81/2” x 11”) Practice Packet –If complete at least 80% and turn in by day of final will get to participate in any curve added to final.

What to Study?

Physics Skills –What is physics The study of mass and energy and their interactions –Science vs. technology Problem solving process vs. a product –Scientific method, variables Order of the steps What is a hypothesis and its purpose Control vs. experimental groups Independent vs. dependent variables

–Math skills Graph reading skills, calculating slope –Liner, direct, indirect (inverse) relationships Using right triangle rules and trig functions Significant figures Scientific notation Algebraic manipulation of equations –Metric system Know the common units of measure and prefixes –gram, meter, second or hour, Newton, etc. –milli, centi, kilo, mega, etc. –Perform simple conversions »i.e., meters to kilometers kilograms to grams hours to seconds

Motion –Point of reference and frame of reference –Distance vs. displacement –Speed vs. velocity –Motion word problems i.e, speed, distance, velocity, displacement and time of travel –Motion graphs Position-time graph –Meaning of slope Velocity time graph –Meaning of slope and area under line

Acceleration –Recognize when something accelerates –Solve acceleration problems i.e, acceleration, final velocity, initial velocity, displacement, and time of travel –Acceleration-time graphs Meaning of area under the line Free fall –Know the value of g –Solve free fall word problems i.e, time of fall, distance fell, landing velocity, maximum height reached if tossed.

Force –Newton’s Laws of Motion Name the laws by number Solve force word problems F = ma a = F/m –Contact vs. field forces What is gravity or a push? –Friction Types of friction Affects of friction Solve friction word problems –Hooke’s Law

Vector addition –Difference between vectors and scalars –Graphical method of vector addition –Analytical method of vector addition –Crossing river and plane navigation problems

Projectile Motion –Describe the trajectory of a projectile –X and Y components of velocity and displacement –When is Vy max or minimum –Independence of X and Y –Solve projectile word problems
