Professor Chris King, Director, the Earth Science Education Unit www.earthscienceeducation.com The Earth Science Education Unit ‘Earth Physics’ workshops for ages 14 to 19

Three workshops: Tackling Climate Change through Earth Physics The ‘Geophys’ Story The Seismology Story All of these are on the CD ROM The ESEU also presents a range of Earth science workshops: for 7 – 11 year olds for 11 – 14 year olds for 14 – 16 year olds using a network of trained facilitators across the UK ESEU members also run the Earthlearningidea website: With more than 90 activities for teaching Earth science A new activity being added each fortnight Using simple apparatus and materials Translated into several languages, including Norwegian ‘Earth Physics’ workshops, the ESEU and Earthlearningidea © The Earth Science Education Unit Copyright is waived for use of this presentation within the laboratory or classroom

Tackling Climate Change through Earth Physics

Tackling Climate Change through Earth Physics © The Earth Science Education Unit Copyright is waived for use of this presentation within the laboratory or classroom At Fysikdagarna 2010 a 90 minute workshop presented in 55 minutes with no starter activity the plenary activity included as one of the circus of activities participants only have 10 minutes to: test the activity prepare a demonstration of the activity for all other participants comment on its use for teaching science in school

Consider the physics behind how climate change could affect the Earth, before investigating different methods of generating power that have low greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, decide which power source would be most appropriate for your region. So, how does climate change work and what can be done about it? Find out through the by following activities: Tackling Climate Change through Earth Physics © The Earth Science Education Unit Copyright is waived for use of this presentation within the laboratory or classroom Conditions for a viable Earth – starter activity Climate modelling – by computer simulations A vapour-compression heat pump Harvesting the wind – with an Ecostyle™ model wind turbine Make and test your own Savonius wind turbine Investigating a photovoltaic panel Power through the window – plenary activity
