4. Clinical Trials Phases I & II Phase I (safety and tolerability) trials which involve first human exposure to a therapeutic agent. Phase II clinical trials primarily are intended to demonstrate whether or not the new drug will provide any benefit and whether that benefit is sufficiently better than standard treatments to warrant further development.
