4 The Righteous of The Scribes And Pharisees Mat 5:20 "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

5 Introduction Many Jews looked to the scribes and Pharisees to learn and imitate righteous behavior But, Jesus warns that those entering His kingdom must display righteousness that exceeds the scribes and Pharisees Briefly, what was right about their righteousness and then what was wrong? What is the warning for us today?

6 To A Great Degree They Sought To Faithfully Follow The Law Mat 23:1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, Mat 23:2 saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; Mat 23:3 therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.

7 To A Great Degree They Sought To Faithfully Follow The Law Act 23:1 Paul, looking intently at the Council, said, "Brethren, I have lived my life with a perfectly good conscience before God up to this day." Act 23:8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor an angel, nor a spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.

8 Did Not Apply Their Teaching To Themselves Mat 23:3 therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them. Mat 23:4 "They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.

9 Did Things To Be Seen and Praised By Men Mat 23:5 "But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments. Mat 23:6 "They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, Mat 23:7 and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men.

10 Did Things To Be Seen and Praised By Men Joh 12:42 Nevertheless many even of the rulers believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue; Joh 12:43 for they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God.

11 Emphasized Outward Appearance Instead of Inward Change Mat 23:25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. Mat 23:26 "You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.

12 Emphasized Outward Appearance Instead of Inward Change Mat 23:27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. Mat 23:28 "So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

13 Selectively Obeyed The Law Mat 23:23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. Mat 23:24 "You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

14 Bound Unlawful Traditions Claiming To Uphold Law Mar 7:9 He was also saying to them, "You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. Mar 7:10 "For Moses said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER'; and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH';

15 Bound Unlawful Traditions Claiming To Uphold Law Mar 7:11 but you say, 'If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),' Mar 7:12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; Mar 7:13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that."

16 They Were Lovers of Money Luk 16:14 Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and were scoffing at Him. Luk 16:15 And He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God.

17 Trusted In Themselves They Were Righteous Luk 18:9 And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: Luk 18:10 "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

18 Trusted In Themselves They Were Righteous Luk 18:11 "The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: 'God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. Luk 18:12 'I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.'

19 Trusted In Themselves They Were Righteous Luk 18:13 "But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner!' Luk 18:14 "I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."

20 We Must Do God’s Will Mat 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.

21 We Must Obey God From The Heart Desiring To Please Him Mat 6:3 "But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, Mat 6:4 so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

22 We Must Obey God From The Heart Desiring To Please Him Mat 6:20 "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; Mat 6:21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

23 We Must Change From The Inside Out Mat 12:34 "You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. Mat 12:35 "The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil.

24 Must Not Neglect Any Part of God’s Will Mat 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.

25 Must Not Neglect Any Part of God’s Will Mat 7:22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' Mat 7:23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'

26 Obey The Word of God Not Unlawful Traditions of Men Mat 5:43 "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.' Mat 5:44 "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

27 Prioritize Serving God Above All Mat 6:33 "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

28 Realize We Can Only Be Saved By God’s Mercy Mat 6:14 "For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Mat 6:15 "But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

29 Realize We Can Only Be Saved By God’s Mercy Luk 17:10 "So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.'" 1Co 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

30 Realize We Can Only Be Saved By God’s Mercy 1Co 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me. 1Co 15:11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
