Welcome to Explore! Ice Worlds Sharing The International Polar Year Through Library and After-School Program Networks

Why Are We Here Today? To keep exploring activities and resources to bring the International Polar Year into children’s programs

Explore! Ice Worlds On line - http://www.lpi.usra.edu/education/explore/ice/activities/ 3 modules of multiple activities –stand alone or together – use as you see fit! Materials list, Book and Web Resources Background Information and scientist’s talks Tied to National Science Education Standards

Last Time Examined properties of ice Explored different ices in the solar system, and where we look for them Today How and where and why we look for ice in the solar system Ice on Earth

Ice in the Solar System Ice and Seek: What is Ice? Ice Zones: Where We Look for Ice Reflections on Ice: How We Look for Ice Ice Quest: Who is Looking for Ice Why Ice? Why We Look for Ice

Ice in the Solar System Ice and Seek: What is Ice? Ice Zones: Where We Look for Ice Reflections on Ice: How We Look for Ice Ice Quest: Who is Looking for Ice Why Ice? Why We Look for Ice

Reflections on Ice How do scientists study ice? How might scientists study properties of ice or look for ice on other worlds? Answer Look at it in different colors or different wavelengths of light

What are some different wavelengths of light? Visible Infrared Ultraviolet Radio X-Ray Gamma Ray

Making Observations What do you see in this ice block? How does your observation change with a different type of light? Use colored flashlights, color gels or filters, and blacklights

What does the light tell you? Texture Composition Scientists are using reflected sunlight (and starlight) to tell them about possible water.

Ice Quest Meet the scientists studying ice across our solar system … including Earth Matching game!

Why Ice? Integrate who, what, where, why into a story, play, exhibit, art …

And Now … Back to

Ice on Earth! Know Your Poles (geographic regions, not people) Polar Bears or Penguins On the Rise The Pole Picture Polar Bears Go with the Floes Activities examine Earth’s poles and the changes happening there … human contributions to those changes … and things children can do to reduce human contributions …

Know Your Poles / Polar Bears or Penguins? Do you know the difference between the Arctic and Antarctic? Does your audience?

In Know Your Poles, children divide into Arctic and Antarctic teams to investigate Earth’s polar regions. Each team reads, records, and shares information about their region. In Polar Bears or Penguins, teams receive a set of Pole Fact cards. Each card contains a fact about either the Arctic, the Antarctic, or both. The teams post the cards to the corresponding pole (or poles), on maps of the Arctic, Antarctic, or in the middle of the two. The team with the most cards correctly placed – WINS!

On the Rise ….. How many of you have visited here? Live near here?

What’s causing this to happen around the world?

What’s going to happen to the water level with time?

Grinnell Glacier in Glacier National Park – 1900 to 1998. Glaciers across Earth are melting … Why? Implications?

On the Rise!

WARM COLD Less ice More ice HIGH LOW SEA LEVEL THENNOW Time TEMPERATURE

WARM COLD Less ice More ice HIGH LOW SEA LEVEL THENNOW Time TEMPERATURE

On the Rise! What might cause Earth’s temperatures to rise?

What’s the role of Earth’s atmosphere in Earth’s temperatures? What happens if you increase the thickness of that blanket?

What might happen to Earth’s temperature if we increase carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? Observed. What could contribute to this increase?

What happened? What does this mean for people living on the coast?

The Pole Picture What changes are occurring as temperatures increase? What might be some of the implications? Let’s look at some data!

1997 Extent of Arctic Sea Ice 1999 Extent of Arctic Sea Ice

2001 Extent of Arctic Sea Ice 2003 Extent of Arctic Sea Ice

2005 Extent of Arctic Sea Ice 2007 Extent of Arctic Sea Ice

The Pole Picture Predictions for 10 years from now? What is the impact on the people who live there? The animals? Data show what is happening, not why! Multiple data sets needed – combine observations to understand what is happening. What can we – as individuals - do to help reduce human additions to global warming – long term?

A Few Opportunities Ice in the Solar System http://btc.montana.edu/messenger/teachers/MEMS_Co mpPlanetology.php#mystery Could Life Survive on Mars? http://phoenix.lpl.arizona.edu/edu_life.php http://phoenix.lpl.arizona.edu/edu_life.php Why Water? http://phoenix.lpl.arizona.edu/edu_whywater.php

Polar Trec http://www.polartrec.com/home Want to go with a research team to the poles? NSF’s Office of Polar Programs http://www.nsf.gov/dir/index.jsp?org=OPP Images, some great classroom resources, Arctic and Antarctic public newsletters

Explore! Ice Worlds Thanks NASA’s Science Mission Directorate for generous funding of Sharing The International Polar Year Through Library and After- School Program Networks

And Thanks To Our Reviewers! Ms. Nicole Betts, Henderson Elementary School, Houston Independent School, Houston, Texas Ms. Reggie Burns, Children's Library Specialist, Allen Public Library, Allen, Texas Ms. Beverly Kirkendall, Library Manager, Youth Services, Hurst Public Library, Hurst, TX Ms. Jeri Zitterkob, Western Plains Library System, Clinton, Oklahoma

And Thanks to You!

Be sure to take the final survey! http://www.lpi.usra.edu/education/explore/ ice/webcasts/index.shtml And print your personalized certificate of completion And now … time for the drawing!
