8 Understanding Regions What is the largest Economic Development Region? – By square miles, it’s EDR 3 - Arrowhead = 18,263 sq. miles By that measure, EDR 11 is the smallest region! – By population, it’s EDR 11 - Twin Cities = 2,952,932 people 54.5% of state’s population 62% of the state’s population gain from 2000 to 2013 – EDR 10 has 500,137 people Gained 40,035 people – EDR 7W has 409,934 people Added 88,139 people (+27.4%) – Combined, those 3 EDRs have 71.3% of state’s pop. and 87.7% of pop. gain In contrast, EDR 1, 6W, and 8 had 4.6% of total pop. and lost -4.8% from 2000 to 2013 EDR # of Cos. 2000 Pop. 2013 Pop. 12 Understanding Regions For the most part, commuting patterns are similar in the Economic Development Regions – Most regions have between 70% and 85% of workers both employed and living in the EDRs – The largest percentage of commuters were in EDR 7E But lots of commuting in EDR 7W, 6W, 6E, 4, 2, and 5 – The largest employment centers are the Twin Cities, other metropolitan areas

17 Understanding Regions What was the fastest growing EDR labor force? – EDR 7W grew 10.7% from 2003-2013 – EDR 4 grew 7.8% – But EDR 11 – Twin Cities accounted for 35,011 of the 81,850 new workers What was the fastest growing WSA? – WSA 16 – Washington Co. = 8.6% – WSA 5 – Central Minnesota = 7.8% – WSA 14 – Dakota/Scott = 6.6% – WSA 17 – Stearns/Benton = 5.8% In contrast, 2 WSAs lost workers: – WSA 10 – Minneapolis = -1.1% – WSA 15 – Ramsey Co. = -2.1%
