1 Welcome National Junior Honor Society Members
First of all….congratulations on being a member of the NJHS! You should feel very honored and proud to be a part of this national organization.

2 What is the National Junior Honor Society?
The NJHS is a national organization of students who have been nominated by their teachers based on their grades and outstanding personal qualities. You are a member of the Fulmore Chapter of the NJHS because last year you earned a 3.5 or higher GPA and your teachers gave you high scores for your personal qualities-such as leadership, character, service, and citizenship.

3 Why is it so great to be an active member of the NJHS?
You are now a member of a very prestigious group of students in America. Students all over our country are recognized for their high achieving qualities by being a member. If you maintain your status as a NJHS member throughout middle school-you may then be eligible to be a member of the National Honor Society in high school. Did I mention that colleges love this society??

4 How do you stay an active member of the NJHS?
Be sure this year you do the following: Watch your grades! You need to still have a 3.5 or higher GPA at the end of this year. 2. Show excellent behavior in your classes and other school activities…your teachers will be looking at your personal qualities again! 3. Complete your 10 hours of volunteer hours by April 30, 2014.

5 What?!? Volunteer hours?? Yes!…in order to remain a member of the NJHS and the NHS all members have to complete a determined number of volunteer hours each year. -Volunteer work is defined as charitable or helpful work done without pay. -You need to earn 10 hours of volunteer work by the end April .

6 How can I get my volunteer hours??
Here are some ideas and information for various organizations around town: Austin Parks service-they have many different projects at most of their parks around the city. ( 2. Tree Folks-plant trees around the city ( ) 3. SPCA or PawMatch-working with animals ( (

7 4. Church events-helping with your church events or doing any volunteer work through the church will count Nursing homes throughout the city need volunteers

8 7. You can do school/neighborhood clean-ups-pick up trash with gloves

You can baby-sit for friends or family at no charge Tutor a family member or friend or tutor a 6th grader after school Spend time and do an activity with an elder member of your family or friend Do your chores around the house for free!

9 -Please be sure you have
your parents’ permission before you do any volunteer service. -You may need to be accompanied by an adult for your service. -You may join other friends and do group projects-please bring any ideas or questions to Ms Granett. -Choose a volunteer activity that interest you-there’s something for everybody!

10 Keep track of your hours!
