Networks & Communications Social, Moral, Economic Effects Part 2 Learning Patterns

What you need to investigate: Learning in schools & colleges Distance Learning Networks & communications affects the way we learn today The fast networks & communication systems we have today enable teachers to… Use computers to demonstrate information. PowerPoint displayed on overhead projectors. Step by step instructions on overhead projectors. Share information easily. Monitor student progress more easily Online Quizzes. Communicate with students via email >>> Learning Patterns

One assignment question you have to explore is… Digital Classroom Could schools and colleges replace teachers with CD-ROMs of information? What are other people’s opinions? What is your own opinion? Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects

This sort of question concerns How do you learn best? How people learn Different people learn in different ways depending upon Age Existing level of knowledge Learning patterns developed from childhood Can we say that one learning method is appropriate for all? Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects Digital Classroom

There are different ways of teaching & learning What is appropriate for a Child Teenager College student Adult Learning Methods Repetition (e.g. chanting the 7 times table) Practical interaction Research tasks Learning games Can we say that one learning method is appropriate for all? Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects Digital Classroom

Which is a better learning environment: reality or virtual reality? What is appropriate for a Child Teenager College student Adult Some think that computers help with learning. Others think… On the two dimensional screen, children see only the choices a programmer has developed for them. A computer can only deliver a limited number of options. Children cannot physically touch or interact with the virtual world So perhaps children don’t benefit that much from computers Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects Digital Classroom

Are computers useful for teaching? What is appropriate for a Child Teenager College student Adult Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects “… E-mail, for example, provides greater opportunity for students to raise questions while allowing them more flexibility to do so. Multimedia demonstrations decrease distance by bringing clarity to concepts that are essential to understanding and appreciating the material….” “…However, many faculty reported that sometimes technology can unintentionally increase the gap between student and teacher. For example, some were dismayed that their beautifully prepared computer presentations had resulted in students sitting passively in the dark with no real opportunity to interact with the teacher.” Digital Classroom Quote from http://www.psu.edu/celt/PST/tech.html http://www.psu.edu/celt/PST/tech.html

How can computers be used to help teach? What is appropriate for a Child Teenager College student Adult Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects Digital Classroom And… Hands-on experience/practice Active learning Capacity for drills Test of literacy Access to information What about… Clarify and explain Illustration Animation Simulation Integration Polish and entertain

So what use are CD-ROMS? Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects Digital Classroom Advantages? Can hold a lot of data Good media for storage of data and records Good as dictionaries, encyclopaedias etc. Interactive CD-ROMs can pose questions and provide answers and/or feedback to students. Disadvantages? inflexible even if they do provide hypertext linkages. expensive and cannot be updated readily.

How do I go about investigating the CD-ROM question? How do I go about investigating the CD-ROM question? Different people will have different opinions. The Internet To find out general info on the Digital Classroom use a good search engine such as Google with appropriate search terms such as teaching learning patterns computers To find out general info on the Digital Classroom use a good search engine such as Google with appropriate search terms such as teaching learning patterns computers To find out info on CD-ROMS try terms like interactive CD-ROMS To find out info on CD-ROMS try terms like interactive CD-ROMS Save any web pages of interest for reading at your leisure. Conduct interviews Conduct interviews Create a short questionnaire Create a short questionnaire Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects How else do I go about investigating the CD-ROM question? How else do I go about investigating the CD-ROM question? Digital Classroom

Another assignment question you have to explore is… Distance Learning Do you think distance learning will replace formal taught education? What are other people’s opinions? What is your own opinion? Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects

This sort of question is What are other people’s opinions? What is your own opinion? Asking for an opinion on something that may or may not happen in the future. We have to.. Look at current trends in distance learning Decide if current trends make it likely for distance learning to replace current formal teaching in the classroom in the future. Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects Distance Learning

What sort of person does distance learning suit at the present? How would Distance Learning suit you? How about... People who live in remote places Working people People with families Individuals that dislike classroom teaching Solitary types? Disabled people Self-disciplined types Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects Distance Learning

What sort of person would distance learning not be suitable for? How would Distance Learning suit you? How about... Young children Teenagers? Gregarious social types? Undisciplined types Individuals that need to interact with teachers Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects Distance Learning

Does present technology help or hinder distance learning? Let’s collect a few opinions Here is one opinion.. “…In some ways, the value of the WWW as a publishing and information distribution platform suggests that the Web is likely to evolve into a sort of high-bandwidth, "smart" TV, but with a degree of interactivity that TV has never had. …” Quote from Susan Mernit http://www.ed.gov/Technology/Futures/mernit.html Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects Distance Learning

Does present technology help or hinder distance learning? Here is another opinion.. “…the benefits of the use of technology and distance learning will not be apparent in an educational organization until all students and teachers have equitable access to the technology and educational programming provided through voice, data and video…” Quote from Sheila Cassidy and Carla Lane, Ed.D. (1996) http://www.wested.org/tie/dlrn/dl.html. http://www.wested.org/tie/dlrn/dl.html Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects Distance Learning Let’s collect a few opinions

Will future technology help increase the usefulness of Distance Learning? “…Collaborative tools, virtual reality, dynamic linking, and advances in languages and browsers also mean profound change as the Internet becomes a fully robust environment. As the Internet grows, we must consider the implications for learning. So we come to our question: What is the future of networking technologies for learning?” Quote from http://www.ed.gov/Technology/Futures/overview.html http://www.ed.gov/Technology/Futures/overview.html Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects Distance Learning Let’s collect yet another opinion

Will future technology help increase the usefulness of Distance Learning? Here are a few points At present, it is not economically advantageous for institutions to offer entire courses based on video-conferencing technology The number of schools, and educational organizations launching WWW sites is increasing every year. The Web enables lecturers to publish their writings and curriculum materials in a way that is both similar to and different from traditional methods. In the future, higher bandwidth will make it possible for students to interactive more effectively with web based applications and help bring tools such as Shockwave, Java, television and video to the desktop. Networks - Social, Moral, Economic Effects Distance Learning

Advantages –Good for People who live in remote places Working people People with families Individuals that dislike classroom teaching Solitary types? Disabled people Self-disciplined types –If Internet forums are used students can interact with each other Purpose of Networks I hate computers! Distance Learning

Purpose of Networks Disadvantages –Bad for Young children Teenagers? Gregarious social types? Undisciplined types Individuals that need to interact with teachers –Costly? –Slow Internet link will cause frustration –Must wait for response from tutor if using email or forum to communicate Distance Learning I still hate computers!

Purpose of Networks Don’t forget to explain how you think future technology will change Distance Learning Distance Learning
