4 According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a family is defined as:  A group of persons sharing a common ancestry  All the members of a household under one roof.

5 IMMEDIDATE FAMILY  you  your parents or guardians  any brothers or sisters you have EXTENDED FAMILY  your immediate family  other relatives: grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins

7 BLENDED FAMILIES Parents/guardians adopted children, step-children, half-siblings FOSTER FAMILIES Foster parents are people who officially take a child into their family for a period of time, without becoming the child's legal parents. The child is referred to as their foster child. OTHER TYPES OF FAMILIES ???

13 One of the most important roles of the family is to meet the physical, mental/emotional, and social needs of its members. WELLNESS An overall state of well-being, or total health.

14 PHYSICAL Involves taking care of you body. MENTAL/EMOTIONAL The ability to accept oneself and others, adapt to and cope with emotions, and deal with the problems an challenges one meets in life. SOCIAL The ability to get along with the people around you.

15 How does family help with your MENTAL/EMOTIONAL needs? Learn how to express emotions in a healthy way Build self-confidence by offering love, praise, and encouragement

16 How does family help with your PHYSICAL needs? Provide food, clothing, shelter, medical care… Protect family members from injury Teach them how to stay healthy & safe

18 Change is a normal part of life and it affects all families. They may experience change in structure and in circumstances. 20 1.Respect each other - value each other’s opinion - listen to each other - disagree without screaming or insults Remember, your parents have lived longer than you – don’t discount their experience and knowledge. HOW TO HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR PARENTS:

21 2.Communicate - Let parents know what is going on in your life. If you keep the in the dark, they can’t help you and they might feel like they are lying to them - Seek their advice for problems (you don’t have to take it) Communication builds closeness.

22 3.Build Trust - Trust is your key to freedom - Must be honest and responsible to build trust When your parents trust you, it’s a lot easier for the to say “Yes” to things you ask. HOW TO HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR PARENTS:
