2 PLUMS and PRUNES Plum fruit is sweet and juicy and it can be eaten fresh or used to make juices. Dried plums are known as prunes.. Prune marketers in the US are marketing their product as "dried plums", because "prune" has negative connotations connected with elderly people suffering from constipation

4 SUGAR ALCOHOLS Sugar alcohols are a type of carbohydrates called “polyols. " Part of their chemical structure resembles sugar, and part of it resembles alcohol. Examples are maltitol, sorbitol, isomalt, and xylitol. They contain fewer calories than sugar

5 SUGAR ALCOHOLS Glucose Sorbitol

6 SUGAR ALCOHOLS Sugar alcohols are not completely absorbed by the body . They can ferment in the intestines and cause bloating, gas, or diarrhea

7 LABELING Sugar alcohols must be listed in the ingredient list.
Included in the carbohydrate listing on the nutrition facts label, either in the total or on a separate line for sugar alcohols. If the product is labeled “sugar-free” or "no added sugar," the manufacturer must show the sugar alcohol count separately.

8 CLIENT SUGGESTIONS Best used for sugar free gums
Large or small amounts may cause GI distress in clients ADA suggests limited use… no more than 2 serving per day. Clients with medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or alcoholism show have physician approval

9 LETS SPROUT! Sprouts are baby plants in their prime
Sprouting is defined as soaking, draining and then rinsing seeds at regular intervals until the pop, sprout or germinate

10 SPROUTING Examples : mung beans, Alfalfa sprouts
Legumes and buckwheat should not be sprouted Nutrient density is high (nutrients per calories of item)

11 CLIENT SUGGESTIONS Healthy and availability is increasing
No limits or harmful effects No documented “curative effects” Avoid sprouted buckwheat and legumes
