2 Policies A policy is a principle or rule that guides decisions Two main policies when dealing with foreign affairs Isolationism – withdraw from world affairs Ignore what is going on in other countries, mind our own business Interventionism – get involved Arms Control - agreements to restrict the development of weapons of mass destruction Foreign Aid – Helping other countries with food, money, protection, etc Economic Sanctions/Embargo – refusing to trade with another country

3 Agencies, Organizations, and Agreements North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) No trade restrictions and lower tariffs (taxes) between U.S., Canada, and Mexico International Red Cross Provides assistance around the world in times of need United Nations (UN) 61 countries that came together after WWII to maintain peace, improve quality of life worldwide, and promote equality and freedoms World Bank Loans money to the poorest nations in the world to help them develop

4 Agencies, Organizations, and Agreements International Monetary Fund (IMF) Sets exchange rates so that money can be used around the world; monetary cooperation World Health Organization (WHO) agency created by the UN to help stop the spread of disease and illness North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Created post WWII; war against one is a war against all. North American and European countries Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Counties that produce oil work together to determine prices and distribution policies

5 Assignment Students will create 2 political cartoons. Each cartoon will portray a Foreign Policy organization or agreement. The cartoons must clearly demonstrate the job or role of the organization you choose.
