1 Environment & Sustainability
GCSE Resistant Materials - Major project Research - Environment & Sustainability

2 Sustainability & Environment Tuesday 2nd July (groups 1 and 2)
GCSE Resistant Materials - Major Project: Research – Sustainability and Environment Sustainability & Environment Timed Task The TIMED TASK for these two areas of research will take place on Monday 1st July (groups 6 and 7) Tuesday 2nd July (groups 1 and 2) You MUST make sure that you have all the necessary information ready and prepared for this session. If you need any help with the preparation for this you should make use of the lunchtime and after school sessions.

3 Design Activity Mark Scheme This will be made up of 5 sections
GCSE Resistant Materials - Major Project: Research – Environment and Sustainability Design Activity Mark Scheme Research - (6 marks) This will be made up of 5 sections Research is superficial and does not focus on the design needs identified in the analysis. Analysis of existing products is insufficient to aid the writing of specification criteria. Research is general, focusing on some of the design needs identified in the analysis. Product analysis is used to inform the writing of some specification criteria. Research is selective and focuses on the needs identified in the analysis. The performance, materials, components processes, quality and sustainability issues of relevant existing products are explored in sufficient detail to aid the writing of specification criteria. 1 2 3 4 5 6

4 Your research will be made up of five sections
GCSE Resistant Materials - Major Project: Research – Environment and Sustainability Research Your research will be made up of five sections These are taken from your brief analysis You are now going to work through each area which will make up your research section

5 GCSE Resistant Materials - Major Project:
Research – Environment Environment This area of research will demonstrate to the examiner that you are aware that the ENVIRONMENT in which a product is going to be used can have a significant effect on its design. Things that you could look at and consider are: The space that is available Where the product is going to be placed Who has access to this area The surrounding colours / materials This only needs to be ½ a page

6 GCSE Resistant Materials - Major Project:
Research – Environment Environment For all of the areas that you consider, you should try to come up with some definite and accurate information that you will be able to: Use to help write your specification Use to come up with some innovative ideas Use to help to test and evaluate your ideas

7 GCSE Resistant Materials - Major Project:
Research – Environment Environment This section of work should start with an INTRODUCTION which should explain why you think it is important to research this area. It is up to you to think about how you display all the information on this half of the page, but it MUST include a PICTURE of the area you are describing and where your product will be used. You should then complete this section with a CONCLUSION which sums up which are the most relevant and important pieces of information and states how you are going to use them.

8 Use obvious, measurable points
GCSE Resistant Materials - Major Project: Research – Sustainability Sustainability This is important as it shows the examiner that you are able to address Sustainability issues within your own designing and making – just as they do in industry. You need to make sure that the issues that you discuss link to YOUR context, not someone else's. You need to look at the following headings and write what is relevant to your product: Reduce Recycle Reuse Rethink Use obvious, measurable points This only needs to be ½ a page

9 Reduce How are you going to reduce the waste that you create?
GCSE Resistant Materials - Major Project: Research – Sustainability Reduce How are you going to reduce the waste that you create? For example: I could use hand processes that do not use power How are you going to reduce the amount of material that you use? How are you going to reduce the amount of energy and electricity that you use whilst making your product? You could use materials supplied by FSC – find out who this is! For example: I am going to ensure that I use as little material as possible. I will do this by planning my practical work carefully and drawing up a clear cutting list. I will then check my marking out before I start so that my measurements are correct and use all tools and pieces of equipment carefully and safely to reduce the risk of mistakes occurring.

10 Recycle Are you able to use any recycled materials?
GCSE Resistant Materials - Major Project: Research – Sustainability Recycle Are you able to use any recycled materials? Would it be suitable to use recycled materials? Would any part of your product be suitable to be recycled afterwards? What do you need to think about in terms of recycling your product? For example: To help the environment I could look at how my product could be broken down and recycled at the end of its use. Think about finishes, adhesives, components, etc – can these be recycled?

11 GCSE Resistant Materials - Major Project:
Research – Sustainability Reuse Can any part of your product use parts from other products who have come to the end of their life span? These could include handles, hinges, etc Why would this be beneficial? For example: As I am making a jewellery box I could look to using pieces of broken jewellery to fashion into handles or decorative aspects on my final product. If done to a high standard this could help to improve the aesthetic appeal of my product. Give some examples of how this could be done

12 Rethink Research – Sustainability
GCSE Resistant Materials - Major Project: Research – Sustainability Rethink At this point you will be highlighting that, before you start to make your product, you will consider the following points: Will your idea do the job effectively? Have you chosen to use the best materials? Are you planning on using the most efficient manufacturing processes? Is your final idea innovative enough to make an impact on the market? Example Before I start to make my final idea I intend to do a last check list in case I need to rethink any aspects of it! Such as ……………
