2 Counselling Supervision Goal: Saksham’s Counselling Supervision aims to contribute positively to the effectiveness of the counselling component of the national HIV/AIDS programme Strategy: Providing ongoing capacity enhancement to the counsellors is an important strategy of Saksham programme 2

3 Counselling Supervision: Planning Phase 2009 Review of existing Supervision models in India Rapid situational needs assessment National consultation on Counselling Supervision (CS) Partner consultation for planning Saksham’s CS activity and its implementation.

4 Counselling Supervision: Start up Phase 2010 Concept note on Counselling Supervision submitted to NACO on April 23, 2010 and endorsed by CCM, May 5, 2010 Consultation with a few SACS and piloting of Counselling Supervision with 250 counsellors (Aug. 2010) GIS-based planning and extrapolation of logistical and financial need Finalising the Counselling Supervision activity and drafting Counselling Supervision Manual Identification of 1200 Counselling Supervisors to reach out to 5209 counsellors (NACO. August 2010)

5 Counselling Supervision: Roll out phase 2011 Regional trainers identified and provided orientation on Counselling Supervision Manual Training of 940 Counselling Supervisors / Mentors completed between Dec. 2010 - March 2011 in 24 states, NCR and 1 Union Territory where Saksham partners are located Roll out of Counselling Supervision between January to March 2011 in all states except Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, and North Eastern states)

6 Status of Counselling Supervisors 2012 Scaled up to cover all districts and about 5000 Counsellors. By Sept. 2012 a total of 1339 Counselling Supervisors were trained to mentor about 5188 ICTC counsellors spread across the country A total of 5232 mentoring visits were made by counselling supervisors to the counsellors till Sept. 2012

7 Main output of counselling supervision Counselling supervisor plans and communicates in advance with each ICTC counsellor about visit and spends 2-3 hours with the counsellor. Tasks of Counselling Supervisors: Explain the purpose of the visit to the counsellor Observe the work environment, the counsellor’s counselling skills and approach Extend support and guidance as needed by the counsellor(eg. challenging patients, situations) Offers feedback on counsellor’s counselling skills Shares information with the counsellors as per need Requests Counsellors to provide feedback (feedback form) 7

8 Counselling Supervision Feedback System The feedback system has been developed to understand how the Counselling Supervision is helpful to ICTC counsellors in the field The feedback system also helps Saksham teams (Partners) to evolve Counselling Supervision activity to suit the needs of counsellors in their respective regions Share overall feedback with SACS and NACO with the idea of enhancing counselling skills in HIV/AIDS 8
