4 3 5.1 Forces of Friction When an object is in motion on a surface or through a viscous medium, there will be a resistance to the motion This is due to the interactions between the object and its environment This resistance is called the force of friction

The force of static friction, ƒ s, is generally greater than the force of kinetic friction, ƒ k The coefficient of friction (µ) depends on the surfaces in contact Friction is proportional to the normal force ƒ s  µ s n and ƒ k = µ k n These equations relate the magnitudes of the forces, they are not vector equations
