3 Weight and Good Health Obesity- Weighing 20% more than your ideal weight. Effects of excess weight are: (1) May develop joint problems Heart must work harder. May develop heart disease and stroke. Higher rates of certain cancers. Lower life expectancy

4 Nutrition and Exercise 3,500 calories stored or burned equals 1 pound of fat. Gain weight= take in more calories than you use. ( do they always turn to fat? ) Lose weight= Take in fewer calories than your use.( will your body adjust when burning fat? )

5 Calculate, pg. 143 2 cheeseburgers= 400 calories each 4 slices of pizza= 125 calories each 3 Pepsi= 120 calories each Large cheese fries- 600 calories 2 scoops of ice cream- 250 each scoop Bicycling= 1 hour Golf= 3 hours How many calories are gained? How many more days to gain a pound on this vacation?

6 Calculate 2 cheeseburgers= 400 calories each/ 800 4 slices of pizza= 125 calories each/ 500 3 Pepsi= 120 calories each/ 360 Large cheese fries- 600 calories 2 scoops of ice cream- 250 each scoop/ 500 Bicycling= 1 hour/ 157 Golf= 3 hours/ 561 2,760 calories- 404 burned= 2,356 calories in one day 2 days will gain a pound= 4,712

7 Tips to Lose Weight (1) Avoid fried foods Eat slowly Don’t skip meals Avoid extreme diets Eat smaller servings of food

8 Tips to Gain Weight (1) Eat larger servings of nutritious foods Concentrate on complex carbohydrates and some dairy products Continue to exercise so weight turns into muscle instead of fat Eat healthy snacks between meals

9 Eating Disorders (1) Anorexia nervosa- Eating disorder in which a person has an intense fear of weight gain and starves himself or herself. Bulimia Nervosa- An eating disorder in which a person repeatedly eats large amounts of food and then purges.
