2 What is Hypertension? A cardiac condition in which the arterial blood pressure is elevated. It’s the opposite of hypotension. Also known as high blood pressure History and Origin: some records in the 6 th century mention people with symptoms close to hypertension.

3 Signs and Symptoms Failure to thrive Seizures Irritability Lack of energy Blurred vision Headaches Difficulty breathing

4 Why Do You Have It? If someone else related to you has hypertension, you have a higher risk of getting it Your environment may impact you A high sodium diet also increases your risk, along with little or no exercise

5 What Happens If I Have It? If you have symptoms of hypertension, they should be addressed quickly or the condition will keep getting worse. In order to diagnose it, doctors must run tests over the course of a week Go see a doctor if you show any of the signs or symptoms.

6 What Should I Do About It? Create a healthy eating plan by limiting sodium and alcohol Lose weight if you’re overweight Get plenty of exercise Learn to cope with stress Quit smoking

7 Medications & Treatments Medications, called antihypertensive drugs, are more effective if you make lifestyle changes It’s recommended that you should correct your diet and exercise more before trying antihypertensive drugs.

8 The Impact on You and Your Family Having your entire family adjust to a new diet can help a hypertensive person It’s helpful to you and keeps everyone in your family healthy!

9 Fun Facts! High blood pressure can cause vision changes or blindness because blood vessels in the eyes burst or bleed Hypertension doesn’t just damage blood vessels, it also damages other organs in the body. For Every person that is treated for Hypertension there is at least one person untreated and possibly undiagnosed
