But sometimes you may want to post things for a smaller and specific audience. For that purpose, you can post to sites that have their own newsfeed – such as a team site – where only people invited to the site can participate. In this example, I’m starting a project on Gear Specs, and I want to share details about it only with team members. So I start by creating a team site for this purpose… I click Sites to go to my Sites page, click New Site, enter a name in the box, and click Create. After a few moments, my new team site appears, and it has its own newsfeed right on the Home page. Now, the first thing I want to do is share the site with team members. I can click the Invite link if it’s there, or click Share at the top of the page. Either option opens the Share window where I can invite people to use the site. I fill out the Share dialog box with the names of the people I want to invite to use the site, and I add a quick message to tell them what it’s about. When I click share, invitees get an email – which includes my message – with a link to the site. Once people join the site, they can immediately share this exclusive newsfeed. I can post to the newsfeed, as can people who have access to the site. I can add other people to the site later as needed. But most importantly, I know that our posts are limited to the current set of team members.

Here, I’m in the Gear Specs team site. And I know that only people with access to this site can post to its site feed. That’s good, but I also visit a number of other sites during the workday, and I might not visit this site frequently enough to always know when people post to its feed. And I also don’t want to miss important posts. At the same time, I know that I visit the newsfeed on my personal site frequently, because updates there are farely constant. And with this in mind, here’s a handy tip: When people post to team sites I’m following, these posts ALSO appear in my personal site feed. And I can reply to these posts right there – my reply will appear in the personal newsfeed for all team site members, as well as in the team site feed. What’s more… I can actually add new posts to the team site newsfeed from my personal newsfeed. I can open a menu above the newsfeed box to display a list of all sites I’m currently following that have their own newsfeed. So, for example, if I want to post to the Gear Specs site, I just select the Gear Specs site in the list, and then create my post. The post appears in my personal newsfeed. But the post also appears in the newsfeed in the Gear Specs team site. It’s a great convenience to be able to post to team site newsfeeds from my personal newsfeed.
