3 BIOGRAPHY  Born in 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois (very conservative suburb of Chicago)  Dad = doctor—avid fisherman/hunter; did household chores and stoically accepted his wife’s criticism; committed suicide 1929

5 Ernest hated his mother!!  Her reaction to SAR: It is a doubtful honor to produce one of the filthiest books of the year. Have you ceased to be interested in loyalty, nobility, honor and forgiveness in life? Surely, you have other words in your vocabulary beside “damn” and “bitch.” Every page fills me with sick loathing. If I should pick up a book by another writer with such words in it, I should read no more—but pitch it in the fire. It is a doubtful honor to produce one of the filthiest books of the year.
