1 Bidding on a Remodeling project
Area, Perimeter, Volume: Lesson 1

2 In this project we will:
Calculate area of quadrilaterals, triangles, polygons, and composite figures Calculate perimeter of quadrilaterals, triangles, polygons, and composite figures Calculate area and circumference of circles Calculate dimensions when given area, perimeter or circumference Use calculations to solve real-life problems Learn strategies for solving GED problems

3 Project overview Your team is going to bid on a remodeling project that will involve painting, replacing carpet, putting in crown molding around the ceiling, and replacing the molding around the doors. You will also be working on a deck and garden in the backyard. Your team will be responsible to calculate the correct dimensions; the amount of materials needed and the cost. Specific instructions will be given after reviewing the basic concepts.

4 Review Basic Shapes Group Task
In your group, match the shapes in your envelope to the chart on p 5 in your packet. Draw the shapes in on your own chart Discuss and write the characteristics of shape

5 Characteristics of shapes
Quadrilateral: Side? Area? Peri? Polygon? Examples Regular polygon? Irregular polygon? 4-sided figures Square, rectangle, parallelogram, trapezoid A=L x W Perimeter = 2(L) + 2(W) Many-sided figure Pentagon, octagon, etc Regular: congruent (equal) sides and angles Irregular: sides and angles that are not congruent (equal)

6 Types of Triangles There are many different types of triangles. The type of triangle is determined by the length of its sides or the measure of the angles. The types of triangles are as follows:

7 Equilateral Triangle Equilateral Triangle – A triangle with 3 equal sides and 3 equal angles. If the perimeter of a equilateral triangle is 45 inches, what is the length of one side? 15 inches

8 Isosceles Triangle Isosceles Triangle – A triangle with two equal sides and two equal angles. An isosceles triangle with a base of 8 cm has a permieter of 28 cm. Which could be the length of each of the other two sides? A B. 10 C D. 20 B. 10

9 Scalene Triangle Scalene Triangle – A triangle where all 3 sides are different lengths and all three angles are different.

10 Right Triangle Right Triangle – A triangle with one 90 degree angle.

11 Acute Triangle Acute Triangle – A triangle where 3 angles are less than 90 degrees.

12 Obtuse Triangle Obtuse Triangle – A triangle where one angle is greater than 90 degrees.

13 Triangle Questions Can a triangle be scalene and acute? Yes
Can a triangle be right and isosceles? Can a triangle be right and equilateral? No
