Technology: Tools for Differentiation Kim Broadbent Provo School District March 2013 Email: kimb@provo.edukimb@provo.edu Website: http://www.trainer.provo.edu/http://www.trainer.provo.edu/ Kim/index.htm

Why Technology? We are preparing kids for their future, not our past. - Daniel Pink

Differentiation “Differentiated instruction is the process of ensuring that  what a student learns,  how he or she learns it, and  how the student demonstrates what he or she has learned is a match for that student’s readiness level, interests, and preferred mode of learning.” - Carol Ann Tomlinson

Differentiation  Students become the center of the teaching and learning that occurs in the classroom.  Four paths to differentiation:  Content-what we teach  Delivery of Instruction- how we teach  Resources and Materials  Product or Assessment- evidence of learning

Differentiation  Feedback is essential! Assessments should be specific and ongoing.  Pre-assessment  Formative assessment  Summative assessment  Technology makes it simple to administer assessments and easier to disaggregate data and determine individual needs.

Interactive Whiteboards Interactive whiteboards allow greater physical interactivity with learning content. This can be done individually, in small groups or as an entire class. The ability to move, manipulate and interact with content on the board is one of its greatest benefits.

Why Promethean?  All interactive whiteboards can engage students. However, the Promethean software, with its multiple layers, allows for more levels of manipulation.  Created flipcharts can be reset and reused with multiple students or groups.  Learner response systems allow students to respond individually to questions and teachers to monitor their progress.  Promethean Planet has over 60,000 free resources. Promethean Planet

iPads iPads have the “touch-ability” factor that engages students in a unique way. They like that iPads can be held in their hands and taken anywhere. With over 700,000 apps available, it is likely teachers will be able to find the exact app a student needs.
