Introduction

GOD’S HEART FOR THE BROKEN Jesus and God’s Heart of Compassion and Redemption John 3:16–17 (ESV) “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

GOD’S HEART FOR THE BROKEN Jesus and God’s Heart of Compassion and Redemption Matthew 9:11–13 (ESV) And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

GOD’S HEART FOR THE BROKEN Jesus and God’s Heart of Compassion and Redemption John 8:10–11 (ESV) Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

GOD’S HEART FOR THE BROKEN Jesus and God’s Heart for Truth and Righteousness Matthew 19:3–5 (ESV) And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” 4 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? John 8:10–11 (ESV) Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

GOD’S HEART FOR PROFESSING FOLLOWERS OF JESUS CHRIST Recognize the Redemption Journey 1 Corinthians 5:9–11 (ESV) Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

GOD’S HEART FOR PROFESSING FOLLOWERS OF JESUS CHRIST Recognize Your Distinctness from the Non-followers of Jesus 1 Corinthians 6:9–11 (ESV) I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.

GOD’S HEART FOR PROFESSING FOLLOWERS OF JESUS CHRIST Recognize Your Distinctness from the Non-followers of Jesus Ephesians 5:9–13 (ESV) (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible,

GOD’S HEART FOR PROFESSING FOLLOWERS OF JESUS CHRIST Restorative Discipline is an Act of Love and Compassion 1 Corinthians 5:12–13 (ESV) For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? 13 God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.” 1 Corinthians 5:5 (ESV) you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

ADDRESSING HOMOSEXUALITY TWO PERSPECTIVES IN THE CHURCH REGARDING HOMOSEXUALITY Homosexuality is a moral, sexual orientation Homosexuality is an immoral sexual lifestyle One is born into this orientationThis lifestyle is developed It is an identityIt is a behavior It is who I amIt is what I do It is naturalIt is unnatural It is a civil rights issueIt is a moral issue Scripture doesn’t condemnScripture condemns It is an unchangeable orientationIt is a changeable lifestyle

ADDRESSING HOMOSEXUALITY Homosexuality & Born Gay

ADDRESSING HOMOSEXUALITY Homosexuality & the Bible Genesis 1:27-28God’s original creation and created intent. Matthew 19:4–6 (NLT) “Haven’t you read the Scriptures?” Jesus replied. “They record that from the beginning ‘God made them male and female.’ 5 And he said, ‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ 6 Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.”

ADDRESSING HOMOSEXUALITY Homosexuality & the Bible Genesis 19:4-8 Jude 7 (ESV) just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

ADDRESSING HOMOSEXUALITY Homosexuality & the Bible Leviticus 18:22 (ESV) You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. Leviticus 20:13 (ESV) If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

ADDRESSING HOMOSEXUALITY Homosexuality & the Bible Romans 1:26–27 (ESV) For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

ADDRESSING HOMOSEXUALITY Homosexuality & the Bible 1 Corinthians 6:9–10 (NASB) Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

ADDRESSING HOMOSEXUALITY Homosexuality & the Bible 1 Timothy 1:9–10 (NASB95) realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers 10 and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching,

HOMOSEXUALITY & THE CHURCH Toward Unsaved People Toward Followers of Jesus Christ Seeking Restoration Toward Professing Christians Obstinate in their Sin

SUMMARY Christians should not be homophobic or receive such a label. Christians should be the greatest resource for hope, redemption, and restoration! Sexual fulfillment is to be expressed within God’s design of a heterosexual marriage as a wonderful gift from God. HVF stands for a monogamous, heterosexual, life-long relationship as God’s original and only design for marriage. HVF cannot in good conscience before God condone and/or perform a legal same sex union or marriage.

SUMMARY Christians are to be alert to our own hypocrisy and lack of integrity. Christians are to be peacemakers, the people most willing to say “let’s talk”. Christians are to be a people of grace who nurture a culture of grace toward all, while uncompromisingly setting forth and standing for God’s truth in love.
