2 Time Given: 3 minutes Last Thursday/Friday, we wrote poems to Holocaust photographs. With this in mind, answer the following questions: 1.What did you think of last week’s poetry unit? Why do you think this? Do you think I should do the same thing next year, change it slightly, or get rid of it all together? Explain your answer. What do you think of the poems that you did write? 3  Forgot a pen or paper?  DON’T TELL ME OR TALK TO ME ABOUT IT.  Go to front door, grab paper and pen. Reminder: Pens and Paper on Table by the door.

4  You must bring a photo of yourself or a family member doing an sport or activity that you enjoy doing.  It can be from ANY time period—recent photo or a photo from your childhood. It does not matter.  You will have your photo returned to you.  Turn it in anytime between NOW and NEXT WEDNESDAY, 4/22.  See me personally if you are unable to print or obtain a photograph.  If you do not turn this photo in, you will receive a 0% in homework and a 0% for a project. Reminder: Homework Is due this Wednesday, 4/22

6  Last week, many of you expressed interest in knowing more about the concentration camp where Elie is being held. Auschwitz

7  Inscription on front door:  Arbeit Mact Frei = work is liberty/freedom  The largest concentration camp.  Between 1.1-3 million Jews died at this location.  Most deaths resulted from gas chambers using Zyklon-B.  The rest burned in crematories. Auschwitz

14  Elie boards the train for the main concentration camp, Auschwitz. In the train, Madame Schachter goes mad, claiming to see flames outside. Elie arrives at Birkenau, the reception center. Tuesday Notes: Night, Chapter 2

15  Part I: Elie enters the camp with his father. His mother and sisters go another direction and are never seen again. People instruct Elie and his father about the rules of the camp. Wednesday Notes: Night, Chapter 3

16  Part II: At the barracks, Elie and everyone else is stripped and shaved. Elie and his father escape the crematory. Everyone is tattooed with a number, which serves as their new name. Elie refuses to eat soup. Monday Notes: Night, Chapter 3
