7 AGB/2006/112 Increasing the safe production, promotion and utilisation of indigenous vegetables by women in Vietnam and Australia In two hamlets (16 members in Di Thang hamlet and 7 members in km 3 hamlet) in the area of from 500 to 1000 m2 / member. Value chain creation PILOT MODEL through FBS for women farmer’s group cai meo - Brassica juncea, bap cai xoe - Brassica oleracea rau khoi tu - Lycium chinense 2009-2012 Locations: Lao Cai province (Sapa and Bac ha districts)

8 8 The aim of the project is to develop and test models that improve the profitability of women farmers supplying indigenous vegetables to potential market in Lao cai and Hanoi cities. Objectives 1.Develop models that enable a competitive market position for smallholder women farmers in a transforming market. 2.Gain a greater understanding of consumer benefits from indigenous vegetables 3.Improve on-farm and through chain management to deliver safe quality products into a transforming market 4.Develop communication strategies that facilitate practice-change in women smallholders

10 10 Stable Supply to Hanoi to 2 retailers in Hanoi Improvement Increasing area of vegetables of all members. Income from increasing price compared normal channel (10%). Income from Ivs becomes the main source (from 10 to 60% total income) on the small area of cultivation (around 500 m2 to 1500 m2).

11 Overcoming technical and market constraints to the emergence of profitable beef enterprises in the north-western highlands of Vietnam LPS/2008/049 2011-2015 Objectives Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of existing beef value chains and the profitability and sustainability of the value chain for smallholder cattle producers. Quantify the biophysical and socio-economic characteristics of the smallholder farming systems involving cattle production. Develop and test viable management strategies for capitalizing on market opportunities and minimizing the impact of the cold, dry season and other important cattle production constraints. Locations: Son La and Dien Bien provices (Moc chau, Mai son districts, Dien bien)

12 CASRAD’s role and activities Conducting research and interventions in Son la provinces to better beef value chain in accordance with technical ‘s intervention and especially the provincial policy and program in cattle development sector. So far… VALUE CHAIN APPRAISAL HAS BEEN DONE

14 The solutions to develop Cao Phong orange Necessary to maintain the stable quality of Cao Phong orange through technique, production organization - business. Only enlarging the orange region on the land area that has suitable natural condition (soil, climate, water…) Supporting the poor to grow orange by the scales through the methods and selecting the inter-cropping plants that has high economic efficiency but do not compete strongly with orange in the building period to guarantee the livelihood.
