3 The Inventor  Augustin Fresnel, a French physicist developed the unique lens designed to produce parallel beams of light  The Fresnel lens was commonly used in lighthouses around the world

4 Notice the profile of the lens

5  A Fresnel lens used in a lighthouse  This lens takes on the appearance of a “beehive” and almost completely envelopes the light source  With a 1000 watt light bulb the concentrated beam produced from this lens can be seen in excess of 20 miles away
