1 Fourth Year of the Implementation of the PAIGH 2010-2020 Pan American Agenda Rodrigo Barriga-Vargas Secretary General Organization of American States Pan American Institute of Geography and History

2 The PAIGH Founded in 1928, permanently headquartered in Mexico Specialized body of the inter- American system coordinated by the OAS 21 member states (21 national sections) and 4 observer countries Assists member states with interpreting their territory based on geographic and historical analyses: Continental vision Innovative measures Heightened scientific relevance Scientific program: Commissions on Cartography (1941) Geography (1946) History (1946) Geophysics (1969) The PAIGH liaises with international organizations such as the FIG, ISO/TC211, ICA, ISPRS and GSDI. Over the past eleven years, 526 projects have been submitted to the consideration of the Officers with the participation of 14 countries

Expansion of the Institute's operations depends on its ability to receive additional administrative revenue since maintenance quotas have not changed since 1996, 18 years ago

5 Execution of Budget on Scientific and Operational Activities, 2003-2013 The distribution of operational and administrative expenses tends to be equal and proportional to budgetary allocations made to scientific endeavors

6 Execution (%) of Technical Assistance Projects and Publications, 2004 – 2013 (US$) Over the past ten years, technical assistance and publications programs have had an average annual execution rate of 82%

7 Periodic and Occasional Publications of the PAIGH Since 2004, the General Secretariat has had very positive results with the on - demand production of its periodic and occasional publications. The PAIGH’s “José Toribio Medina” Bibliographic Fund has 231,078 titles

8 2013 Highlights The 20th General Assembly (Uruguay, 2013) approved a program consisting of 19 projects worth US$137,340. Six correspond to the Commission on Cartography, 4 to Geography, 3 to History and 6 to Geophysics. Two of the approved projects are of an inter-disciplinary nature: Cartography/Geography and History/Geophysics. All are committed to the Pan American Agenda The technical assistance program was efficiently carried out “2013 Geocentric Reference System for the Americas: Technical- Scientific Capacity – Building of Reference Systems” (Commission on Cartography, Panama) “Teaching and Learning Geography with New Communication and Information Technologies” (Commission on Geography, Argentina) “The Cultural Heritage of the Americas: Preservation, Commerce and Social Uses” Seminar (Commission on History, Mexico) “Contributions to the Study of Global Climate Change and Space Climate Forecasts “ and “Seminar on Measures to Prevent, Mitigate and Adapt to the Impact of Climate Change, Tropical Hurricanes and Tsunamis” (Commission on Geophysics, Dominican Republic)
