8/23/2015 1 Capitol BEST 2004 Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology Sponsored by Greg Young Capitol BEST Director

8/23/2015 2 BEST Purpose toward studies and careers in InspireMotivate To Inspire and Motivate students…. Engineering,Science, and Technology through a sports-like competition a problem to solveIn a limited timewith limited resources “the game”“the kit”“6 weeks”

8/23/2015 3 Our emphasis is on Design Process… Robotics is the vehicle we use… Important Facts No Cost to Schools… …Early Fall contest (Sep/Oct) 6 week timeframe… …Hands-on learning Industry Mentors… …Student Diversity

8/23/2015 4 Capitol BEST Participation

8/23/2015 5 BEST Robotics Growth

8/23/2015 6 What Can Students Expect To Learn? Engineering Design and Build processes How to Apply Math and Science Concepts Teaming Concepts Brainstorming Methods Chance for ingenuity and out-of-box thinking Improvement In Critical Thinking Skills Alternative ways of solving difficult challenges Developing strategies Not about winning or losing, it is about the process and the gaining of real life successes

8/23/2015 7 What The Schools Provide l Administration support / desire l Students (5-30, 10-15 works well) l Teacher Sponsors (1-2) l Classroom/Shop access after school hours l Transportation to/from competition sites

8/23/2015 8 Building The BEST Team Most successful teams are composed of mixed grade-levels and minimum 2 technical coaches Teams operate best from a single campus population Design and build facilities are necessary Safety Training is MANDATORY Students learn best when they are responsible for ALL activities Coaches and Teachers are primarily for basic guidance and consultation

8/23/2015 9 Student Eligibility l School determines own eligibility l Teams are unlimited on size * l Not limited to science/math students l Encourage all students – Engineering/science/math – Shop skills – Graphic arts/design – Organizational/teaming/leadership – Writing/communications – Computer/web design * There may be a maximum number of awards per team based upon available budget

8/23/2015 10 Role of Teacher Sponsor Assist with leading student teams Help identify and develop team leaders Manage access to school facilities and equipment Manage parent permission for student participation Manage transportation to/from events Maintain discipline of individual team members Manage funding support and parent support Help celebrate achievements of the team

8/23/2015 11 Role of Students Review the rules and question all loopholes Perform the majority of the design and construction Document all design, manufacturing and testing Perform and document any associated research tasks Lead any media and community relations activities Show off accomplishments during head-to- head competition

8/23/2015 12 Role of Coaches/Mentors Provide an understanding of the engineering process Explain the importance of schedules and budgets Provide technical guidance Ensure the students consider all phases & deliverables Guide Student Brainstorming Sessions Discuss methods for evaluating design concepts Describe prototyping methods Encourage student participation Pose questions to force team to think through ideas completely

8/23/2015 13 Time Commitments l What can teams expect during the 6-9 week period? WeekActivityDays and Hrs/Week 1 Kickoff meeting/Brainstorming3 days, 3 hrs/day 2 Brainstorming/prototyping3 days, 3 hrs/day 3 Prototyping/start machine build4-5 days, 3-4 hrs/day 4 Machine build4-5 days, 3-4 hrs/day 5 Machine build/Mall day4-5 days, 4-6 hrs/day 6 Refinement, driving practice4-5 days, 4-6 hrs/day End of 6Local hub competitionFri night, Sat 7,8,9Repairs, refine, practice3 days, 2 hrs/day End of 9Texas BEST competitionFriday-Sunday Note: This is on the high side, but the schools which have been successful spend this much time, and more!

8/23/2015 14 Capitol BEST Awards l The BEST Award – Engineering Notebook – Informal Interviews – Team Participation l Sportsmanship Award l Founders Award for Creative Design l Most Robust Design l Most Elegant Design l Game Specific Award (most points, etc.) l Best Dressed Award (best T-shirt design) l Competition Awards (1st through 3rd) Teams receive trophies and other prizes.
