1 How to Create a Winning Resume Presented by: Bethany Bagley College of Education Career Consultant Making the Grade in YOUR Job Search: A Teacher’s Guide to Career Success

2 The Resume  Highlights:  Education  Certifications  Experience  Skills  Accomplishments  Accent the positive:  Most important info first  Focus on achievements and successes  Emphasize any computer/technical skills YOUR Marketing Document

3 The Resume  Formatting  One full page/two full pages  Limit white space (margins~.5)  10-12 point font  Use bullets, not paragraphs  Action Words  No Pronouns

4 Making a Good Resume GREAT  Be relevant  Be concise  Be consistent  Consider the Employer’s Perspective  What skills, abilities, experiences, and characteristics do you have that will meet the employer’s needs ? Think before you write…  What is the purpose of a résumé?  Who is the intended reader?  What message do I want to send?

5 The Employer’s Perspective School Districts Speak Out! How can a candidate make him or herself stand out in their resume?  “…when applying for a specific job, tailor the resume to that position. That means researching the position and emphasizing your attributes that make you the perfect candidate.”  “High GPA, special endorsements (math, gifted, etc.).”  “include volunteer opportunities in a school environment; make sure the information is free of errors, well-organized, and professional”  “Keep it neat, concise and orderly with dates and location of student teaching and work history.”  “On a resume, I look for their educational preparation, degrees and certification first in an attempt to make a match. Once you have this basic information, I like to see what else they can bring to the table as in extracurricular activities, fine arts, or class moderator positions. We have 100 teachers on staff, but everyone has to do something else to be hired and it's nice to see that on the resume.”  “Put "highlights" of their experience teaching/student teaching.”  Know Your Strengths and Fit for THAT specific school!

17 Resume Tips & Reminders  Omit all personal pronouns  Avoid wordiness  Provide information that is relevant and positive  Quantify & Qualify when possible  Prioritize information  Emphasize importance: Bold, italic - help to highlight items you want to bring to the reader’s attention - Do not overuse  Don’t include personal information, salary requirements, or geographic preferences  Proofread, Proofread!!
