1 COMMUNITY HEALTH PROJECT Winter 2013

2 What is the Community Health Project?  Community – partnership between KU health graduate degree seeking students & community clinics, charity, lobbying, advocacy and/or assistance organizations  Health – combating health disparities such as access to care & access to healthy foods, activities, obesity, end of life care, pediatric oncology, health literacy, health policy, and more!  Project – students devise own public health project to fit needs of agency & patient population needs—very individual and very flexible!

3 T HE 5 W’ S OF CHP Who can participate? M1 Students (KC, Wichita, AND Salina campus) PharmD, RD, PT, OT, MPH, HIM, other graduate students What will I be doing? immersed within a local agency and completing a research or service project When does it take place? 8 weeks (256 hours) over the summer of 2014 before your M2 year Where does it take place? YOU choose the agency. *In KANSAS, or KC-MO area We do have over 30 agencies to select from (i.e KHI, KC Care Clinic, Sedgwick Co Hlth Dept, Silver City, JCo Hlth Dept, & MANY OTHERS!!) 4 Two opportunities for CHP roles:  Student Intern  June 2 nd to July 25 th  8 weeks, ~32 hrs/wk  $2,500 scholarship  Interview w/ 3 possible agencies of your choice  Weekly Journals  Attend 3 Educational Conferences  Final Project and Presentation  Student Directors  March 2014-2015  $4,500 scholarship  Assist w/ intern match  Organize, plan, communicate, advocate! 5 So why should YOU do CHP?  Community Health Project is:  Hands On  Inter-professional  Service Oriented  Clinical  Great Learning Opportunity  Chance to learn about sociological aspects of medicine  Paid a great stipend!  Given Credit Hours  You Become a Mini-Expert in a field of your choice!

9 WMBK  Guaranteed Scholarship ($2,500 or $4,500)  4 credit hours through the Dept. of Internal Medicine  Applications available next month, due Jan 24 th (directors) or Feb 7 th (interns)  8 weeks: June 2nd to July 25th  Great opportunity to expand upon any skill you are wanting to improve (clinical skills, public health, health policy, etc.)  Excellent way to give back to your community or any community around the state of Kansas  Freedom to choose your agency and your project focus!  MAKE AN IMPACT LOCALLY! chealth@kumc.edu for more info (what must be known!)
