3. He Did WHAT???? Three years after the Brown v. Board of Education decision, the federal court ordered Little Rock to comply. The day of September 4, 1957 Governor Faubus defied the court and ordered the Arkansas Coast Guard to PREVENT the “Little Rock Nine” from entering the building.

4. He Did WHAT??? 2 Ten days later President Eisenhower told him to use the troops to PROTECT the teens. When he returned to Little Rock he dismissed all the troops leaving the Little Rock Nine open to crazed white mobs. By noon that day all of the African-American teenagers were evacuated by the police.

5. To The Rescue When President Eisenhower learned about this he sent the 101 st Airborne Division. By 3 a.m. the paratroopers surrounded the school, bayonets ready.

7. He Did What??? 3 The Little Rock Nine finished out the school year. The next year Faubus closed all the high schools forcing The Little Rock Nine to go to out-of-state schools. The school board reopened all the schools in 1959. More violence occurred for example one of the student’s house was bombed. 4 of the 9 students returned this time protected by police.

9. The Importance of this Topic This topic was important in the Civil Rights Movement because it helped to move forward to desegregate the schools. It also showed how much the south still did not want equality with the African-Americans. It also shows how cruel the whites were to the African- Americans. We can tell by this that the south wanted everything to stay the same.
