More than 20,000 people are already registered in the central database. Long queues at passport control are a thing of the past. The first of such systems in Brazil, it began operations in 1974. It is approximately 335 kilometers (208 mi) long, and runs from Taipei City to Kaohsiung City. THSR began operation on January 5, 2007. THSR is based on Japan's Shinkansen system. The construction and other related costs of the Budget Terminal are about S$45 million. The 25,000 square meters terminal comprises two adjacent single- storey buildings for departure and arrival and is about the size of three football fields. The terminal will initially be able to handle about 2.7 million passengers per annum. It was completed in December 2005 and has opened for operations on 26 March 2006. It is a major aviation hub in the Middle East. The Emirates hub is the largest airline hub in the Middle East and Africa; it handles 60% of all passenger traffic, and accounts for 38% of all aircraft movements at the airport. In 2009, the airport was the 17th busiest in the world by passenger traffic and 11th busiest by cargo traffic, handling 1.824 million tonnes of cargo in 2008. The port area of ~20 km 2 currently features fully operational businesses along large scale construction activities. Investments in industries, infrastructure and utilities amount to $12 billion (2002-2008), a figure that will rise as more and more investors discover Sohar. In two years’ time the Port of Sohar will house three fully developed clusters: a petrochemical, a metal and a logistics cluster.
