Diagram Your Network Last Update 2007.06.08 1.1.0 Copyright 2002-2007 Kenneth M. Chipps PhD www.chipps.com 1

Objectives of This Section Learn how to draw and explain a basic telecommunications network Copyright 2002-2007 Kenneth M. Chipps PhD www.chipps.com 2

Scenario This lab has two parts One part is open and above board the other is somewhat surreptitious Copyright 2002-2007 Kenneth M. Chipps PhD www.chipps.com 3

Part One Draw a diagram in Microsoft Visio that shows a telecommunications network Use a standard symbol for each part and label each part on the diagram This can be a LAN or WAN at your workplace, if you work, or in your home If you do not have a LAN or WAN in your home, you need to build one Copyright 2002-2007 Kenneth M. Chipps PhD www.chipps.com 4

Part One There is no better way to learn, than to setup your own LAN at home Be prepared to discuss this network in class on the day this lab assignment is due Copyright 2002-2007 Kenneth M. Chipps PhD www.chipps.com 5

Part Two This is the somewhat surreptitious part I assume many of you do not work with a LAN or WAN at your place of work or in your home That is why you are in this class So, I want you to go and meet the people at your workplace who do control the network there Copyright 2002-2007 Kenneth M. Chipps PhD www.chipps.com 6

Part Two This can be the Local Area Network or a Wide Area Network Draw a diagram in Microsoft Visio that shows what this network looks like Use a standard symbol for each part and label each part on the diagram Be prepared to discuss this network in class on the day this lab assignment is due Copyright 2002-2007 Kenneth M. Chipps PhD www.chipps.com 7

Part Two There are two reasons for this part of the lab assignment The first reason is to let the class see the different kinds of networks they will encounter The second reason is to give you an excuse to introduce yourself to the people who are doing the kind of work you hope to do in the future Copyright 2002-2007 Kenneth M. Chipps PhD www.chipps.com 8

Part Two As I said the first day of class, it is first what you know that gets you ahead But it is certainly true that who you know makes a big difference as well You now have a perfect excuse for going and bothering these people Just say that I made you do it Copyright 2002-2007 Kenneth M. Chipps PhD www.chipps.com 9

Part Two Say that you are so sorry to bother them, but you will get a bad grade in the course if you do not get this information for me Hopefully from this encounter you can build an ongoing relationship and thereby gain that constantly elusive first bit of real life on the job experience with a LAN or WAN Copyright 2002-2007 Kenneth M. Chipps PhD www.chipps.com 10

Part Two I will not insist that everyone turn in something for Part Two, since not everyone has way to do this But if you have this type of opportunity and you do not avail yourself of it, you are only cheating yourself Copyright 2002-2007 Kenneth M. Chipps PhD www.chipps.com 11

Review What did you learn Copyright 2002-2007 Kenneth M. Chipps PhD www.chipps.com 12
