Authentic family and community engagement is key to increasing student achievement and preparing them for college, career and life. By partnering with parents, educators, local businesses, churches, community organizations, elected officials, city departments and other stakeholders, FACE is committed to strengthening the connections between our schools and our communities. The FACE framework includes: Local School Council Relations, Community Action Councils, Office of Faith Based Initiatives, FACE Managers, Volunteer Programs and Parent Universities.

2 Parent Universities Parent Universities represent an innovative engagement model designed to drive parent and community participation in the educational experience of our students, while providing vital supports to stakeholders. By providing access to computer labs/parent resource centers, training and meeting rooms, along with CPS navigational supports and developmental programming, parents and community partners are better equipped to support student advancement. The first phase of these neighborhood-based sites include: Humboldt Park (Roberto Clemente Community High School), Austin (Spencer Technology Academy), and Englewood (Sir Miles Davis Magnet School). Community Action Councils (CACs) Community Action Councils, or CACs, are comprised of 25-30 members, tasked with developing a strategic plan to achieve educational excellence in their respective school communities. CAC members include: parents, students, elected officials, faith- based leaders, Local Schools Council (LSC) members, business leaders, educators, school administrators, staff members from Chicago’s sister agencies and community residents. There are nine CACs in the following neighborhoods: Austin, Bronzeville, Englewood, Humboldt Park-East, Humboldt Park-West, South Shore, Far South Side-Pullman/Roseland, Lawndale and Hyde Park. CACs collaborate with community stakeholders to educate and empower them in supporting and improving schools in the community. Office of Faith Based Initiatives The Office of Faith Based Initiatives (OFBI), under the leadership of Rev. Renaldo Kyles is committed and dedicated to strengthening bridges between Chicago Public Schools and the faith based communities of Chicago. Our mission is to establish effective partnerships with faith based institutions across the city. We understand the role of faith based leaders as valuable resources, and know that these partnerships actively engage the community and contribute to the success of our students and our schools. OFBI has several programmatic branches: Safe Haven, Crisis Training, the Annual Operation Love-a-Child Coat Drive, The Church Adopt-a-School, and Capacity Building Training. Safe Haven The Safe Haven program is housed in the Office of Faith Based Initiatives of Chicago Public Schools and provides a “safe haven” for CPS students that is a reliable and no- cost alternative for students and their families. The mission of Safe Haven is to eradicate bullying and instill practices to combat youth violence and to engage students in workshops that focus on positive conflict resolutions, anger management, anti-bullying, and anti- violence. Safe Haven is a partnership between CPS and the Faith Community. There are currently over 120 established partners. The program runs in four cycles: Winter Break (December/January); Afterschool (January-May); Spring Break (April); Summer Break (end of June-August). The program serves over 12,000 students annually. FACE Managers The Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Managers support the Chief of Schools and the Family and Community Engagement Officer by providing strategic community outreach and training assistance. FACE Managers are the architects and facilitators of a range of caucuses with thought partners, comprised of LSC members, parents, community organizations, elected officials and other key stakeholders, designed to foster understanding and develop strategies to strengthen educational outcomes. The FACE Managers collaborate with the Chief of Schools to ensure parents and community partners are aware of school performance, along with providing proactive engagement opportunities to fortify strong working relationships. FACE Managers are actively involved with the schools in their network and coordinate with principals and staff to deepen parent engagement and leadership development. Local School Council Relations (LSCR) Local School Council Relations oversees and facilitates the operations of site-based management teams in each school, while expanding all facets of communications with schools, parents and the greater community. LSCR seeks to develop strong relationships with community and faith-based organizations, social service agencies and city departments to advance academic success and strengthen positive learning environments. Additionally, the department provides systemic and comprehensive training to all local school council members, coupled with resources and specialized supports to all parents of CPS students. Volunteer Programs Volunteer Programs are intended to provide a stream-lined pathway for parents and community stakeholders to contribute their valuable time and talents to the learning and enrichment experience of our students. Through strategic engagement with school leadership, the department is deepening the pool of volunteer talent, while establishing mutually rewarding experiences for students, parents, partners and schools. In concert with overseeing school-based volunteers at 664 District schools, the Volunteer Programs department works with an array of external organizations, including community organizations, city agencies, businesses and corporations.
