 Do Now: Take out your notebook and study for 5 min  Quiz  Seed Dispersion Notes  Seed Dispersion Video

Please Do Now: What are the three main parts of the seed?

 Seed dispersion is the transport or movement of seeds away from the parent plant

 Plants need to disperse away from the parent plant because in general the resources around the parent plant are already being exploited by the parent  Seeds that sprout right under the parent have to compete with it, and hurt the parent as well

 Wind  Water  Animals  Mechanical

 Seeds are adapted to be carried by the wind, often with some sort of “sail”  Common in windy areas  Actually seeds are very small (small endosperm)  Very random

 Common in plants that live in or around water  Seeds don’t have to be light, do have to float  Can only take seeds right around water

 Some seed bearing structures are designed like a catapult to “shoot” seeds away from the plant when ripe  Not dependent on animals or the weather  Can’t go very far from parent

 Can happen in three ways: In the digestive tract ON the surface of the animal When seeds predators hoard and forget about them

 Many seeds are found inside fruits, which animals eat, then defecate out later  Seeds are tough to survive the passage  End up in a little pile of fertilizer to start life

 Some seeds have sticky hairs or pointy barbs that get stuck to fur when animals walk by

 Squirrels find some seeds, stash hem away in a whole, forget about them or get killed, and the seeds germinate

 The seeds and their surrounding structures are adapted to their particular form of dispersion  This takes an investment in energy Ex: fruit for animal dispersers Ex: Wind dispersers are tiny with a sail

 Seed dispersal is ______. It is necessary ________. It can happen in multiple ways.

 Seed dispersal is _the movement of seeds away from the parent plant_. It is necessary _to avoid competition with the parent plant_. It can happen in multiple ways.

 In your notebook, describe 1 example you see of the 4 different modes of dispersal we discussed (water, wind, animal, mechanical).
