3 Sanding and Refinishing Hardwood Floors  Tools Pry bar Hammer Nail set Putty knife Drum sander Edge sander Dust respirator Shop vacuum Tack cloth Lamb’s wool pad Clean rags

4 Sanding and Refinishing Hardwood Floors  Step 1: Prepare for sanding Remove the base molding Check for squeaks Nail loose floor boards Fill holes with wood putty Contain the dust with plastic sheeting

5 Sanding and Refinishing Hardwood Floors  Step 2: Sand the floor Wear dust respirator Use drum sander Begin with coarsest sandpaper: 36-grit Switch to 60-grit sandpaper

6 Sanding and Refinishing Hardwood Floors  Step 2: Sand the floor (continued) End with finest sandpaper: 120-grit Sand 3 to 4-foot lengths of the floor with the wood grain Sweep and vacuum between sanding

7 Sanding and Refinishing Hardwood Floors  Step 3: Sanding the corners and edges Wear dust respirator Use edge sander and fine sandpaper Can be difficult to control Practice in hidden area, such as a closet Clean up dust with vacuum and tack cloth

8 Sanding and Refinishing Hardwood Floors  Step 4: Apply a wood stain Use clean rags or a foam applicator pad Work one area at a time (4 square feet) Stain in the direction of the wood grain Wipe off the excess stain after a few minutes

9 Sanding and Refinishing Hardwood Floors  Step 4: Apply a wood stain (continued) Allow stain to dry for 3 to 4 hours Apply a second or third coat of stain to achieve desired color.

10 Sanding and Refinishing Hardwood Floors  Step 5: Apply polyurethane Use a lamb’s wool pad Allow polyurethane to dry 3 to 4 hours Apply 2 to 4 coats After final coat is applied, allow 24 hours before light use Show off your handy work to others!
