2 By the end of the period, students will be able to: Conduct a college/career search on the Family Connection Program Understand how values, interests and talents impact college/career choices Know the different post-secondary school options and what they require for admission

3 o At the University of Maryland College Park… At the University of Maryland College Park… o At Montgomery College… Any student who has taken either the SAT or ACT may waive the placement test if their scores are: SAT Critical Reading=550 ACT = 24 or higher SAT Math = 550

4 o At the Military Academies… Strong academic programs Tuition, fees and other expenses are covered Five years of active duty required after graduation o At Lincoln Technical Institute… There are 6 different programs of study: Automotive Health Sciences Spa & Cosmetology Business & IT Skilled Trades Culinary Arts

Typically have agreements with four year colleges to transfer credits. Typically around $4,000/year Open-door admission policy Post Secondary School Options

8 ~Military- Active duty, academies. ~Job Corps- Develop important career placement skills. ~Employment- Full and part-time opportunities. ~Apprenticeships- On the job training; work-study.

9 SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) – Required for admission at the majority of colleges and universities – Consists of three tests: Critical Reading, Math, Writing – Each test is scored on a scale of 200-800 ACT (American College Test) -Accepted in place of the SAT at all four-year colleges and universities – Consists of four tests: English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing (optional) – Top composite score is 36 Accuplacer -Placement test -Primarily used for admission to Montgomery College and other smalle schools -Consists of Reading, Writing and Mathematic. ASVAB -Similar to a career interest inventory (to determine interests, skills, abilities) -Used for recruitment into the military -Given in March (check in the college/career center) TOEFL -Used to determine English proficiency for English language learners.

10 o Must use to submit requests for official transcripts and counselor/teacher recommendations o Conduct a college search o Keep track of the college application process o Register for college visits in the career center o Check it…and check it OFTEN!!!

11 1.Login using your student account information 2.Go to Internet Explorer 3.From the Sherwood home page, click on the “Career Center” tab 4.Under “Links,” click on “TCCi Family Connections” 5.Type in your username/password. If you do not have one or forgot, raise your hand and someone will help you. 6.Click on “Colleges” tab. Click “College Search.” 7.To explore careers, click the “Careers” tab. Click “Explore Careers & Clusters” and type in your career interest (ex. Automotive, plumbing, cosmetology, etc.)
