4 Step 1 Use It! Using the digital scale record the mass of 5 items Pencil Paper lined Paper unlined Binder Rock Check out and proceed to step 2

5 Step 2 Prove It!  Using a the digital scale and a graduated 100 ml cylinder, prove to me that 1 ml of water has a mass of 1 gram  Checkout and then proceed to step 3

6 Step 3 Prove It!  Prove to me that a rock is more dense than a cork  Checkout and proceed to step 4

8 Step 5 Compare It!  Compare the accuracy of the digital scale to a triple beam balance scale using known weights. Ensure you zero adjust the triple beam balance scale before you begin.  1 gram weight  Digital scale  Balance  100 gram weight  Digital scale  Balance  500 gram weight  Digital scale  Balance  What can you conclude?  Checkout and proceed to step 6  Compare the accuracy of the digital scale to a triple beam balance scale using known weights. 9 Step 6 Zero it and then Compare It!  First, place a 100 ml graduated cylinder on the scale. Then press the Tare/menue button. The scale will go to zero; therefore future readings will not include the weight the cylinder. Add water in the following amounts and record the weights. Be precise!  20 ml  50ml  100 ml  What is the weight of 1,246 ml of water?  What is the weight of 1,246 ml of water on the moon?  What is the weight of 1,246 ml of water on Jupiter?  How much would the lightest person at your table weigh on Jupiter?  First, place a 100 ml graduated cylinder on the scale. 11 STEP 8 Figure it out  You are part of a design engineering team at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia. You are tasked with designing a submarine ballast system for a new class of submarines. Your team has decided they must answer these questions prior to designing the ballast system  How will you get water into the ballast tanks  How will you get water out of the ballast tanks  What might your piping system look like?  Where will you need valves to control the flow of water?  Where will you need vents?  Checkout and proceed to step 9  You are part of a design engineering team at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia. 12 Step 9 Draw It! Work together as a group. Design and draw a simple submarine ballast system. Who does what Group of two: you need one drawing using paint application software Group of three or four: two students work together on the paint application drawing, each additional student in group must also sketch it on unlined paper

13 Evaluation As a group, on a 1-10 scale, how did you do? Write the numbers in red Everyone is the group participated equally score Everyone in the group was helpful, respectful and courteous to one another score Everyone in the group was on task the entire time score The group completed all of the assigned activities score List the names of the people in your group. Next to each name, that person must evaluate their worn performance on a 1-10 scale during this lab
