HOW TO FIND DENSITY Produced for Mr.Chulik by Marisa Hanson Renee Garrett

Finding Density In order to find the density of an object, you first weigh it on the triple beam scale. The weight of this object is the mass. Mass is usually measured in GRAMS. Use the TRIPLE BEAM BALANCE SCALE in order to figure out the amount of GRAMS that an object has as its mass.

Step One Put your object on the scale and carefully BALANCE, THEN add up the 3 beams total to figure out the amount of grams.

Step Two The second step of finding density of an object is to find the volume of the object you are testing, by using the graduated cylinder OR taking its length x width x heighth.

If you are using the GRADUATED CYLINDER, fill the GRADUATED CYLINDER with water so it will completely cover the object. Write down the starting measurement BEFORE you place the object all the way under the water.

Drop the object in and record the new measurement. Be careful to read it correctly! However many MILILITERS the measurement rose, is the VOLUME of your SOLID OBJECT in CUBIC CENTIMETERS.

NEXT BIG STEP The last, and final step is to divide the mass of the object by the volume of the object. Mass is in GRAMS. Solid Volume is in CUBIC CENTIMETERS

Let’s say that your object had a MASS of 10 GRAMS. Its VOLUME might have been 5 CUBIC CENTIMETERS. You would take 10 GRAMS divided by 5 CUBIC CENTIMETERS and get 2 GRAMS FOR EVERY CUBIC CENTIMETER.

Another way to write 2 GRAMS FOR EVERY CUBIC CENTIMETER is 2GMS/CC We will say that density, in this class, will be expressed as GRAMS PER CUBIC CENTIMETER OR GMS/CC OR G/CC All of these abbreviations mean the same thing :- )EVERY ELEMENT HAS ITS OWN DENSITY
