4 ECOSOC Innovation Fair A parallel event to the High-level Segment Objective: -Mobilize a wide range of stakeholders in support of successful development activities -Provide the opportunity for the private sector, foundations and other civil society organizations to share examples of innovative products. -To raise the awareness of decision-makers at all levels for achieving the UN Development Agenda - Promote the transfer/sharing of knowledge, expertise and experience through networking and peer-to-peer learning.

5 ECOSOC Innovation Fair 2007 The 2007 AMR Innovation Fair was held on 2-5 July 2007 at the in UN offices in Geneva, focusing on the theme: “Strengthening efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger, including through the global partenership for development” The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, visited the areas where non-governmental organizations were exhibiting.

6 ECOSOC Innovation Fair 2007 32 NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC showcased their innovative success stories at the fair.

7 ECOSOC Innovation Fair 2008 Civil Society Participation The Civil Society segment of the ECOSOC Innovation Fair in 2008 with NGOs showcasing innovative projects in regards to the theme of the High Level Segment of ECOSOC - “Implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to sustainable development”. 8 Civil Society Participation at the Innovation Fair 2008 The DR Coral Garden Project is a dynamic public-private initiative to conserve and restore threatened Caribbean coral reefs and associated habitats in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) at Punta Cana, Bayahibe, Samana and Sosua Bay in the Dominican Republic. 14 NGO Partnership/Collaboration Paperless Committee System An online meeting system used by the Committee on NGOs during the review of applications for consultative status with ECOSOC NGO Response System An online system used by the NGOs to better communicate with the Secretariat during the review of their application or quadrennial report. Multi-stakeholder successful partnership initiative Developed and supported through partnership of member states, civil society, and internal UN departments. Lead to significant increase in the number of NGO’s that are granted consultative status due to the elimination of cumbersome paperwork The ”Paperless Committee System” received the UN21 Award in 2008 for outstanding staff initiatives

16 UN-NGO-IRENE United Nations Non Governmental Organizations Informal Regional Network Facilitates consultation and effective collaboration and partnership between the United Nations and NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC REGIONAL COORDINATORS 1- The NGO Informal Regional Network Coordinator’s networking activity at regional level will be clearly delineated and agreed upon by each coordinator organization in collaboration with NGO Section/DESA. 2- The NGO Informal Regional Network Coordinator will be responsible for establishing contact throughout its designated networking region with all NGOs in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council as well as potential applicants for consultative status; 3- The NGO Informal Regional Network Coordinator will be responsible for establishing systems of communication to transmit information from the NGO Section to NGOs within its designated sphere of activity, particularly those with limited access to the electronic communication network.
