2 Look at these words and listen to me read them out loud: audio audience What letters are the same in both words? Did you say “audio” is the same in both words? Audio is a Latin root meaning “to hear” Many English words have Latin roots. Knowing the meanings of these roots can help you figure out the pronunciation and meaning of many words.

3 Look at this word and listen to me read it out loud: contradiction dict is a Latin root that means “to say or speak”. Breaking this word into its parts can help you determine its meaning. Contradiction begins with the prefix contra-; it contains the Latin root dict; it ends with the common suffix –ion. You can put these parts together to read the whole word: contradiction.

4 Look at the chart below. With your partner decode the words in the column labeled, Words, by identifying the Latin root, pronouncing each root syllable and reading the entire word.
